College Loans

So I'm looking into becoming independent and claiming Ohio residency. In order to do so I have to register to vote, get a license, register my car in Ohio, have a job (or other money that has been in my name for 12 months before my review period), live there for 12 months, and be financially independent.

Currently my dad pays for college, and he's a cheap bastard so I know he wants to hold on to me for tax breaks, so he's coming up with any reason not to let me do this. One of the neccessities of being financially independent is I'd have to pay for college. He absolutely will not let me do that (what a fool, I'm offering to take tens of thousands of dollars a year of his back and he won't let me.) Basically I wanna know if I take out loans in my name, would that be proof enough of my "paying for college", or would I also have to provide evidence that I am the actual person paying off the loan? I've never dealt with loans before so I don't know how that shit works.

I'll be starting my third year of college this September.

I have an apartment and the lease goes through next summer, and I wanna stay there next summer. I also plan on getting a job and registering to vote (Ohio vote > New York vote), so I figured why not go all out.

And I have no idea about FAFSA, my dad deals with all that shit for now. That's another reason I want to be independent, I gotta learn how all this shit works eventually.

ehhh, kind of.

The real reason I have taken so long is 1) I dropped out of high school so I had to take alot of pre-reqs and 2) I changed majors and had alot of classes that didnt count then 3) the requirements for my major changed.


You dont even have a major huh?  Do you have any idea at all?  Hopefully you dont take alot of useless classes like I did.

I keep saying Music History, but I haven't done shit to get into the program. I'm gonna have to start practicing my ass off and studying theory if I want to get in.
Otherwise I'll probably take comm, or something else real easy.
Almost all the classes I've taken so far and received credit for (not many) go towards GECs. I think maybe one or two don't, but I can still use them as electives, and one will be good for a required course if I do end up in music history.

I sincerely doubt you're going to be able to become independent or get residency if you are being claimed by your father.

up to a certain extent, and depending on the school/state.

School loans are AWESOME! low interest rate, independent of you or your parents credit history, unless youre doing the advertised shit on TV... dont.

do the shit your school offers, and get subsidized loans because your interest is paid. dont get unsubsidized loans

That's the whole point.
I'll get a job, pay my own bills, car insurance, etc. etc.
He's just not cool with it if I have to pay for school.
So can I take out the loan and have him pay for it without them knowing, or is that impossible?
If it's impossible I'm just gonna become a resident and he can pay me back after I'm done with college if he wants to.

Because it will make me feel better about myself.
I don't like having people pay for me all the time, and I have terrible financial responsibility because of it.
I think it might help me in school too, knowing that I'm the one throwing money down the drain for my 1.3 gpa.
