Going to a college 20 minutes from home...

I am transferring to a college that is about 20 minutes from home.
I currently go to a college with about 5,000 students and almost all of them live on campus. Its about 2 hours from my hometown. The college i am transferring to has about 10,000 students and about 3,500 live on campus. its about 15-20 minutes from home
Anyways im planning on living at the school even though its close to my home (i dont want to live at home).
I am kind of hoping that the distance is far enough that i dont get caught up in the day to day BS that comes around when you live in town, but close enough that I can do things in my town when theres things to do, keep in better touch with my friends, be able to have a girlfriend from home, etc. But at the same time be able to meet new people at school and have the independence of being able to live on my own and have the college expeirence.
I am transferring because the new school costs 1/2 as much as where i currently go to and its a better school. Also I dont like the area where my school is now.
I am wondering if anyone has had a similar situation to me and if so how did it turn out?

I think his handle might give a clue to that question.
