A basic question about jars
    #872930 - 09/09/02 06:08 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

If I pressure cook some jars that don't have any holes in the lid, how should I prepare them?? What I did was, loosen the lids around them, and put 3 layers of foil around em tightly so no water would get in, was this the best way to do this?? thanks!!!

I would think not. It seems that you are going to have to risk introducing contaminats when innoculating. why didn't you follow the tek? However you could screw the lid on then sterilyze a nail with rubbing alcohol and a lighter and then puncture the lid for your innoculation holes.

Well, this wasn't for a cake or anything. I mixed some agar and poured it into several half pint jars, then pressure cooked those, as opposed to pressure cooking the mix in a bigger container and then pouring. There is a post about this in the advanced forum now. I didn't want any holed in the lids cuz it's agar in there, I wanna be able to seal it up nice and tight. So I was wondering if what I did was the best way possible, I couldn't think of any other way to do it.

But then you are left with somewhat residue on the nail and then introducing that into the substrate. Follow the tek's they didnt get called tek's cause they didn't work :/

sorry, I should have said in the beginning that it was for use w. agar so everybody wouldn't have gotten confused!! I was using the jars as pressure cookable agar plates so I could prevent the pouring phase and help lessen chance of contamination.

Ahh ok. Well good luck I just think the tek's are a great source of dedication and work so why wouldnt they work? Also u know much on agar isolations of pure strains and maybe somehow introduce or cross pollinating fungi like you would with say plants to get them to behave differently (make a new strain). And does anyone have the TOC or table of contents for the mushroom cultivator i just want to see how its divided up.
