H2o2 destroys spores, but not mycelium. Probably too high a concentration will kill the mycelium, but plain old 3% doesn't offer much of a threat. It's metabolized into its component parts by enzymes.

funkyballoon:

Let's say I was going to try and make a mycelium-solution syringe by doing the following:

1. cutting off a sugar-cube sized chunk of healthy mycelium from a 100% colonized jar.

2. dipping the chunk of mycelium in regular 3% hydrogen peroxide for a few seconds, and then dipping it in distilled water to rinse.

3. placing the H2O2-rinsed mycelium chunk in a glass jar with a hole in the lid, injecting some distilled water in, swishing around, and then sucking the mycelium-solution back up into a clean syringe.

Would the brief H2O2 bath harm the mycelium in any way? Would it be beneficial in fighting contaminants?

thanks
c

funkyballoon (again):

Well, sorry to ask a dumb question, I just found the answer in one of your previous posts:
http://www.shroomery.org/ubbnoncgi/Forum2/HTML/012457.html

I guess H2O2 doesn't really hurt mycelium that much...

Another question, though: why do you recommend using the mycelium from a fruit's stem to make syringes, as opposed to mycelium from a 100% colonized cake? Is it because not all of the mycelium in the cake has genetics to fruit, whereas the fruit stem mycelium does?

thanks
c

Another bonus to using the mycelium from the stem is that, unlike colonized substrate, the mycelium in the stem is non-nutritive. When cloning on agar, the flesh from inside the stem or cap is used. With the extra sterile measures of only using the flesh from inside the stem and making the transfer with a glove box, flow hood, oven tek, I can see no reason why this shouldn't work. If you sterilize a half pint jar of water and then add enough 3% h2o2 to equal 5% of the total volume, that should help keep things sterile. If you were to put a blender base on the jar before sterilization, this could help break up the mycelium. You could also add some glass shards to the jar for this purpose.
