Link growery and shroomery.

Perhaps it would be convenient, and beneficial for both sites as far as traffic, if an account for The Shroomery or The Growery was automatically (maybe upon request even) an active account for the other.

The ratings would not necessarily carry over, and certainly not supporter status, but login privileges would be sweet.

Good suggestion and I personally agree with you. However, this was already discussed and the general consensus was people wanted to keep them separate. Also, it's kind of late to start make such big sweeping changes to the way the sites interoperate. We did try to compromise by offering that grace period where Shroomery usernames could only be registered on the Growery by their original owner, and it might be possible to implement a stripped down version of your suggestion where people would have the option to import their Shroomery preferences when registering a new account. But really, the proper way to do this is to add OpenID support to the BB, which is something I would like to do but it's kind of a major project...

I might have commented as such in the discussion (too busy to look now), but I personally think that importing user preferences from one to the other would be a useful feature.  This way I can easily set my growery account to match all my settings or vice versa - and keep them in sync if I wish.  It is kind of a bunch of extra busy work, though, when the registration and activation together literally takes a minute (I just did it today!) and it doesn't take too long to edit profile and settings (haven't done it yet, though).  As such, perhaps this should be added to the list of possible features for supporters?  That way you can put it off till someone wants this feature enough to pay for it.

Actually, that isn't a bad idea and is doable without too much pain.

A bit harder, and likely to open up bugs in the future when new prefs are added (depending upon how it were implemented...)

Hopefully it would be implemented pretty generically (this outline is EXTREMELY general)...  lets say I was in my growery account and wanted to import settings from my shroomery account.  I imagine each setting has a unique name (or text) so I could just import the shroomery settings with names that are also in the growery settings (and vice versa).

I can see the benefit to us too, anything which encourages people to use the Growery more is a good thing. :smile: I'll work on this.

how about hosting an openID server for supporters? I would love to have "automan@shroomery.org" be my openID.

Okay I finished the script to import settings between the Shroomery and the Growery. If you don't have an account, it will also let you create one with your existing settings. To transfer from the Shroomery to the Growery, visit http://www.shroomery.org/forums/userexport.php. To go the other way use http://www.growery.org/forums/userexport.php. Please let me know if you encounter any bugs!

And auto, OpenID support is on my to-do list but it's pretty low priority since it's not really that widespread yet... if and when it becomes more popular I'll definitely get on it.

Great work!  Unfortunately, one issue...  Should it not be called userexport? Since with this script we are actually exporting settings TO it.

Heehee, thanks...  it bit me in the ass because the first thing I did was go over to the growery to import my settings *DOH*...  Then I had no settings anywhere.  Only took a couple minutes to update them again, and then a few seconds to export them over.  It was very much win!

A possibly future enhancement might be a multi-select box or group of checkboxes (probably less confusing for most people) that defaults to every setting ready to import, that way users can keep skins different between sites if they want (as I noticed my growery account was looking kinda shroomy).
