Radiation in my Food
    #8673842 -

I was wondering if anyone has any links to any studies confirming or denying the relationship with stomach cancer and microwaved food.  Or anything negative resulting from using a microwave for food or any other reason.

It is low level radiation, it is not ionizing radiation (ie, no cancer).

Microwaves are a great way to heat food, they are the most energy efficient way to heat food that exists.

They do deplete some nutrients, but it is a small amount (the rumors are over exaggerated).

Microwaves even had a role in womens liberation.  They are a great invention.

So basically the food or water that comes out of the microwave will not contain any detectable radiation whatsoever?

It will have no more coming out than it had going in.

There are two types of radiation, ionizing and non-ionizing.  Things like x-rays, UV light, and cosmic rays are forms of ionizing radiation.  Visible light, radio waves, microwaves, and infrared light are all forms of non-ionizing radiation.  From a danger to health perspective, ionizing radiation blows apart DNA causing cancer while non-ionizing radiation does not.

GM actually built and tested a house that used microwave radiation to "warm people" directly rather than a traditional heater to warm the air in a house.  The experiment didn't work for obvious reasons.

And even if it was ionising radiation, it wouldn't become radioactive, right? You can blast something with gamma rays all you like and it's not going to make it radioactive - to do that, you'd have to contaminate it with a radioisotope.
Is that right?

To the OP: microwaves just heat water so there's no difference between boiling a potato in the microwave or on the stove. They're just a lot more convenient.

once I found out about "broiling" foods in my toaster oven (yes, only recently ... I know nothing about preparing food), I never used a microwave again ... meats stay tender and juicy when you broil them, but when you microwave them, they become dry and ... gross.

broiling FTW!

Yes and no.  In general, you are correct... however, the fine print has a gotcha called photoneutron production.  High energy gamma can interact with some elements causing them to release neutrons (through photodisintegration) and neutrons can interact with some elements causing them to become radioactive.  Although gamma typically does not directly cause something to become radioactive, it can initiate a process which ultimately results in the creation of a radioactive substance.  (At extreme energies, gamma can initiate fission of atoms.)

what about fire?

microwaves change the flavor and texture of food, I hate
microwaves for that reason, I dont want rubbery flavorless food

I completely agree

I don't avoid microwaves because of the radiation fears

they just suck - reheats in the oven are far better

How stable would these products be?

Fire is about the most inefficient way to heat food.

I disagree especially in terms of cost comparison, with an open
fire it's quite inefficient but when you build a box around the
fire and direct the heat it's pretty effective, if you have that
fire on the end of an acetylene torch, you can have your steak
extra crispy outside and still cold inside, lets see you do that
with a microwave

But think how hot an enclosed fireplace gets. A microwave doesn't get nearly that hot - in fact it usually doesn't even get warm. Its energy is all directed into heating the food. It doesn't produce any extraneous heat or light.

Sure if you are using free firewood, then it is the most cost efficient possible.

I was referring to energy efficiency, in which the microwave is king (by far).

This is an unanswerable question.  Depending on the circumstances, you could end up with something completely stable or something that lasts for only a fraction of a second.
