Innoculating with Filter Discs ... ?

How in the shit should i inocculate my pint jars if i've got them jimmy hatted with filter discs? should i just penetrate the discs with my narrow needle ... in turn squirting out my live giving spore ... or do i remove the filter to bare the substrate to the air so i may avoid weakening the integrity of the disc by putting four holes in it. what the fuck am i to do friends? :confused: :crazy: :blush: :grin:

i've made that mistake with half pints before. take some wire mesh, i used a cookie sheet, and make a shelf over one of the big burners on your stove range, assuming you have one, and do your work on this shelf. by turning th erange on to a low setting you create an updraft so that nothing icky and bad, like from your breath, can fall into the jar. then unscrew the lids and squirt away. alternately you can use an oven with the door open, but i found this to not work nearly as well as a range. piercing the filter disk sounds pretty counterproductive to me, but i suppose you could do that then seal the hole with some glue, if you don't have an oven.

www.micronmagick.com says this about innoculating their pre-sterilized jars:

"To inoculate simply unscrew the band and remove the lid. There will be a MMFD [Micron Magick Filter Disk] protecting the mouth of the jar. Stick the needle though the disc and inoculate the substrate. Put the band and lid back on the jar and incubate. If you want you can drill a 3/8 of an inch hole in the lid for added gas exchange."

My plan is to innoculate through the MMFD and then screw the lid back on. I'll loosen the lid a little when colonization is near complete.

Are you using pre-sterlized jars from micronmagick?

If you've got MM's then just stick it through them. If you've got fp/mycosupply, i remove them.
