u should have poked a hole in the lid. You can still do this, just dont expose the substrate, as in: dont let the filter move while your poking a hole in the lid. then return the lid and you should have about a quarter inch hole with a filter visable

Couple of things. One uses filter discs for only two reasons;
1- Keep contams out
2- Allow for air exchange

It's a trial and error thing to figure out when to use them for air exchange. For instance you may find that your substrate is too wet. In that case, take the metal lid off and just leave your filter disc on. Make sure your hole that you put in the disc (if you did) is not open to direct air. Some folks suggest using two discs if you take the metal lid off. Sometimes for really slow colonizing jars, getting air exchange is all that is needed to really speed things up. Hope that helps...

Hello,

Here is my two bits worth of information -

1.  If you are using half pint wide mouth containers go buy your self the plastic lids and drill 3 holes around the inside for your inoculation points and air flow - When you PC the half pints put tin foil over them - After you innoculate put strips of masking tape over the holes for a couple days.  Then take the tape off - The vermeculite will serve as your buffer against contams -

2.  If you are using Quart widemouth then you should be using a filter disk, with the plastic wide-mouth lids and one 1/4" hole drilled in the middle for innoculation and air flow.

Other than that filter disks are not needed unless you are having problems with contams.

Well good luck with your adventures!

Peace out!  :grin:
