I read that PF cakes work, but that birdseed/rice works better. Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone out there?

Where did you hear that?

Anyway they are not easy to grow.
there is alot of info on them.

I always get kiled by mold
(Blue this time!)

Good luck with them but I would advise
you to grow cubensis (It's easyer)

They are easy to grow just read the mushroom cultivator and buy some equipment!!! and secondly, the brown rice and verm method does not work, the mycelium will grow on this media but it will not fruit, check out http://www.thehawkseye.com under mushroom info there is instructions for creating a spawn media for copelandia cyanescens that can be packed into PF style jars, a media they will be able to fruit on.

I don't think easy is the right word
for pan cyans. I have grown them but
I almost cost all my cubensis trays
due to contamination. I could give you some tips though spray with a 10% solution of
H202 and keep them isolated they need more air exchange then cubensis and a higher temp.
Straw has been a nightmare due to the green mold. manure is slow growing and also prone to contamination.
I am still working on an easy tech for these
little basterds but I would say just keep trying.
I would also love to hear any other Ideas
that work.
I have seen alot of posts since last year
when Ryche first started.
But lets be honest with limited success.
This is a strain worth developing and we should all
put our minds to it !

Beautiful shot, MJ. I'd like to address sean's comment that the BRF method doesn't work. It does work. what you need to do is take a couple of colonized jars, break them up, let them recover, and put a .5 inch layer of pasteurized horse shit on them. Let the mycelium colonize that shit(no pun intended), and then case with peat moss. They're very juicy if you do that. It's not hard either, just be an anal retentive when it comes to sterility practices.

Thats a nice approach with the
BRF horse manure!

Do you think that you could get the same results with grain spawn?
I have great success with the mycelium
just not with fruiting.

Re: Copelandia cyanescens

I am thinking of using a variation of the alien substrate to grow up pan cyans:
1/2 cup vermiculite
1/4 cup dung/compost
1/8 cup niger finchseed
1/8 cup brown rice flour
water to appropriate moisture
*all measurements are per jar

I plan on putting this substrate in jars until full colonization and innoculating dung/compost with the colonized cakes. I will then case with a potting mix that I got from a nursery that contains peat/verm/lime. Any results I get I will post....not sure if I will be able to provide pics though cuz no one I know has a scanner. I will see what I can do though.

So far here's what happened: after 2 weeks the jars were completely finished, so I mixed each jar with about 3x as much nuked manure/compost that I got from home depot. The compost took only 5 days to colonize. I then cased with the potting mix I described above and mycelia started peaking up after 24 hrs. I have been giving them light 12hrs per day for like 4 days and I am starting to see pin formation. All I have to say is that so far these have been a cinch to grow and they are so damn fast!!!! Thanks for the phatty spores sporechicks!!

You're welcome, Shaman1...good job with the potting mix. Didn't know that could work, although sheep dip and organic steer manure in veerrrry thin casing layers work great.

Yes, Pan cyan is a very fast grower. I had Pf style jars fully colonized in fourteen days. I crumbled two cakes in a pan, misted the top layer of the cake with diluted H2O2 and let the mycelium recover for a day under 85 degrees temperature. Then I put the horse shit layer on, which only took three days to colonize. Every time I misted the horse shit layer it was with hydrogen peroxide. I then put a thin (.5 cm) layer of neutralized peat as a casing, and kept it in the heating blanket at 85 degrees F. Within a couple of days, I was sketching out because I saw a bunch of tiny dots on the surface of the casing layer. No need to trip, they're primordia.
Unfortunately, despite all my precautions, 70% of the substrate got hit with green mould, but the 30% was able to fully develop. After picking everything (today), I threw away the whole thing and inspected the cake. Even the portion which was fruiting was completely contaminated.
Are these little shroomies safe to consume (not that I would ever do such a thing... I know MJ would say yes, but I need the logic behind it...explain to me how mycelium takes in nutrients.

we grow them first in jars on sterile cowdung...and then mix the jar in 10 times the amount of pasteurized cowdung...this works great...no contams that usually appear if you work with grainspawn on dung or on straw...

Azure, BIO do you use old dung (dry) or fresh and, BIo do you sterilize it in the P. cooker ?
thanx

When invitro, it always needs to be sterilized. When cased indoors, it needs to be at least pasteurized. Very old horse dung contaminates less and has a less acidic ph, which is ideal for Pan spawn run.
