Does anyone work in sales? (And before you say it, not drug sales, assholes!)

Just wondering what kind of shit you guys sell, what you get paid, how you like it. All that kind of stuff

My dad does. He does really well. He started pretty low on the chain, but moved up and now he's like their goto guy for the entire southeast. Oh hes a sales rep for like delta faucets, rheem water heaters...All that shit. I work in computers and I make jack so don't do it.

His gas is payed for, he gets to go out to eat and take customers which is paid for, he plays golf which is paid for, they have hunting trips that are paid for, they send him like 4 cases of crown royal to give to customers which ends up in my hands 90 percent of the time...The pay isn't bad either. It really depends on if you have the opportunity to expand or not. If not then I would say sales would suck.

i'm a sales manager, we sell home security systems door-to-door. i drive a company van and close deals for new reps, so its hard for me to complain about it, my job is cake.

i'm salaried + commission & overrides, but when i was a sales rep, i made $125-700+ per sale, average probably being $400/sale. the company i work for now basically screws all the reps with commissions of $125-$350/sale. knocking doors sucks, to be honest, i'm only at this company b/c i don't have to anymore.

sales is fun sometimes, and i enjoy riding on the van with the reps, its always funny, but i can't/won't do it forever. i've been in sales for 3yrs now, it's done me much better than most people i know who wait tables and shit, but it does get old.

our average sales rep makes it either 3 days, or 6 months, but its pretty rare for people to stick with it very long, which makes it a great way to move up in a company.

the way to do it is to get some basic sales experience doing door-to-door or over-the-phone sales, and then move into doing sales for Dell, or some other giant corporation. they will treat you very very well if you're good. i haven't done this b/c i'm going back to school and i need my current hours/money.

*edit* also, i haven't paid for my own gas since September of 2007, which is tight.

Awesome. Good thing to be involved with. People are always wanting to build stuff, and so build them for them...Then let the real estate agents try to sell them in this shitty economy. Good choice.
