microwave instead of pressure cooker

How would you go about using a microwave to get the same job done as using a pressure cooker?

Nope. Microwave will only pastuize, not setilize. Microwave for casing mixes, PC for jars. Next time try a search, this has def been discussed.

Things in a microwave don't cook even, they get hot spots and cold spots.

If your serious about mycology you will get a pressure cooker there isn't a substitute.

Otherwise if you just want to use the microwave search, there are posts about this already.

It does work. I have jars around 3 years old with no contams that were microwave sterilized.

The vast majority of people fail with microwaving. The TEK on this site is crap, I would expect most to fail using it.

I have posted details on how to do it properly but found no real interest. You can search my old posts to find how to do it right.

And I am doing grains in the microwave, not just BRF jars.

Buy a pressure cooker.  They aren't that expensive and you'll save a lot of frustration, time and money by not messing around for 2-3 months trying to get a poor method to work.  As stated above, there is not a substitute. 

Check you're local thrift stores.  I see pressure cooker around here for anywhere between 2 or 3 bucks up to 15 or 20 depending of the size and condition.  I'm sure you can get one to start with for about $5.

Many batches of grain do not contain any endospores and if you get lucky enough to get one of these, you could even just boil your jars to sterilize.  However, if endospores are present, it takes a temperature higher than 212F/100C to kill them, and you can't get that without pressure.  At normal atmospheric pressure, by the time the contents of a vented jar in a microwave reach 101C, all the moisture inside has been turned into steam and escaped.

There is no substitute for a pressure cooker on a continuous basis when doing grains.

I agree. I stated reasons it would be useful. Many people might not even have a pot big enough to steam in. Also Verm, and tapered jars are hard for some people to find, or they have to travel further to get them. Most people will have regular jars and a microwave.

Another reason people would fail at microwave fractional sterilization, or just regular steam fractional sterilization, is that they will follow textbook guidelines. This is usually 30min heatings, I have seen some state 20mins.

If you look at textbooks it will often say 15mins at 15psi. Nobody here does that, you need time for the grains to reach temp, most will use 4-6 times that amount of time. Fractional sterilized jars will also need a lot more time for the grains in the middle of the jar to reach 100C, it is only then that you can start timing your 30min. And I usually would go longer.

Not to be repetitive, but since I don't think anyone said it exactly:

Microwaves don't work because they can't reach the same super-boiling temps that a pressure cooker can. There is nothing you can do to your microwave that will make it bring something above 212F without boiling the moisture out. PCs add pressure so that you can make something hotter than boiling temps without actually boiling the water inside, and that's why they're good for cultivation.

So no, no, no, no, no. If it works once, you're lucky, like someone said.

i used a microwave for liquid cultures and 4 out of 6 went. the other 2 looked like shit from the beginning and did nothing but contaminate. i only used it because my PC got a hole in it and i didnt have cash for another at that time. PC is way better end result and has been tried and true.
