Word is if you wanna work with grains u really need a pc ideally at 15psi. Cakes of pf style can be used with boiling and then u can innoc bulk substrate with cakes the same way u do grain.
-------------------- Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded. - Abraham Lincoln: Speech in the Illinois House of Representatives, Dec 18, 1840.

Why do you want to avoid verm? Its not scary, and if you're nice to it, it'll be nice to you.

If you are using grains, you NEED a pressure cooker/canner. Fractional sterilization is rarely good enough. Maybe if you injected a ton of mycelial slurry into a small amount of grain (like 4oz) in a sterile environment (enclosed HEPA filtered etc) you would beat the contams--but this is likely to be the exception to the rule--not worth the risk.
Can anyone out there say they have had consistent success with grains and fractional sterilization?

hey dude, why cant you get a PC? want a free one? at least for a couple days? take $50 or whatever from some buddies, rip on down to walmart, and buy one, get a chintzy aluminum presto one, and head on home, and be careful with it, and crank out a couple hundred jars, or whatever you want to do, and then return it within a couple weeks. i think they have a 30 day return policy? im not sure i only used it for a week and returned it. not a problem.
the next step, if you want one of your own, is to head back in with about 80% of the price of a new one, and haggle on one the one that you bought and returned, talk to a manager and get it for about 3/4 of the price. i've done both on seperate occasions, and they both work.

It's not so much a haggle as you say "hey man this thing has been opened, its all messed up, who knows if all the parts are there and working, cut me a deal"

I would stick to the strait PF without a PC... I don't havn't really attempted anything else with any success, without a pressure cooker.
