I - Ching
    #8560936 -

So, any regular practitioners of the I- Ching?  I contemplated putting this in the literature section but I felt that the use of, rather than just reading the actual text of the I - Ching is a much more spiritual and mystical practice.

And for those of you not familiar, the I Ching is a very old  Taoist book of change.

the i ching is extremely interesting, and a lot of the times just plain eery.

I've used Tarot, but found that the I Ching speaks to me much more clearly and in my humble view offers more sage advice.

There was a time when I really really wanted something and asked the I Ching whether it would be OK. Not satisfied with NO for an answer I asked it over and over all afternoon long, about 15 or 20 times in a row.

All the answers amounted to the same NO and gave sage advice about it from all possible angles. I decided to go with a Yes nonetheless and paid the price in EXACTLY the ways the I Ching warned me I would.

This is completely against all probability.

Even if you blatantly generalize that the I Ching offers a 50/50 shot at a desired answer (which is not how it works) the one time I approached the I Ching like a nagging child it gave me an answer with a statistical probability of 1 in  1.048.576.

One in a million. I wrote it down and it all came true.

I greatly respect the I Ching for that. I won't ever nag it again.

Absolutely. It doesn't even require a supernatural beliefs system.

Even if you believe the text you are referred to is picked randomly, then still you are referred to a text of wisdom that has the potential of inspiring your thinking further because of involvement of an outside source.

You can be completely rationally nihilistic yet still use it as a source of inspiration. Even if you think of it as "random words of wisdom" they are still words of wisdom, which can help your thought process in reaching a decision.

Once you get the hang of interpreting the interpretations, the I Ching will work for you.

I'm glad so many others use the I- Ching...it has definitely guided me through many tough times in my life. In fact my first tatoo is planned to be Hexagram 57...the first Hexagram I ever threw. Oh such a good, and optimistic omen it was.

If I would use I Ching, I would still have to use my mind to interpret the readings. I mean.. aren't the readings purely subjective? Can't I just interpret the readings like I want? If this is the case, I might as will drop I Ching, and just meditate on a certain decision, combine that decision with all possible possibilities and outcomes and you will find the answer too..

To me it seems, I Ching is just a tool for people who don't believe in the divine power of their own mind. And need this tool because they can't be convinced that their mind is way more intelligent than themselves... I'm guessing your subconscious is leading the interpretations, and you just think they come from the I Ching readings but they actually come from within yourself. But then again, this tool might make it more easier to tap into the powers of your subconscious mind.

Can anyone share some experiences how the I Ching "works"? It sounds interesting to me, but I really don't see how it would work tbh. Can you give me a few concrete examples on how you do a reading to make a decision?

I think you got it there, in the bold. Tarot and I-ching just help. It's like using a hammer to pound in a nail or another piece of wood. Even the highest adepts I have encountered on the net (don't know anyone who likes anything occult in real life) use tarot or I-ching.

It seems like bringing information into the physical plays a huge role in assistance and understanding. For example, you could just meditate, as you mentioned, but it might be harder to clamp down on what is being delivered. I found this same logic applies to psychedelic experiences also, which hand out inspiration, clarity and substance if you can put it into words, or in some other way bring it down to earth....as the I-Ching does and why it originally was formed with stalks of Yarrow.

That's awesome, Wiccan_Seeker! I've never had that my reoccurances in i-ching, but I've thrown tarot 5 or 6 times getting the same card. I've only thrown i-ching a couple times, though I asked the same question twice and got the same hex...

I have a quick question for you folks who are active with i-ching - does it offer much for interpretation? It seems to just give answers and you apply them to your life. Tarot is so open - it gives you the canvas and colors and you paint the picture. It seems like I-Ching just gives you a complete picture. You get a hex and read it, read the moving lines and that's about it, right? There aren't too many options...unless I'm missing something?

btw are any of you die-hard and use yarrow? or do you use coins?

edit: had one more question - Do you ever read for others? how do you go about it?

I find the I-Ching to be a phenomenal divinatory system and use it frequently.  I've gone against the advise of the reading numerous times and have always gotten bit.  I use liber 216 for interpretation: http://hermetic.com/crowley/libers/lib216.html

When looking at those poems, one can say that there are many ways to interpret it.  However, I've found that they become easy by the way you concentrate upon the question.  It is paramount to concentrate on the question as it would happen.  Never ask a yes or no question or what you should do.  To illustrate, say you want another car when the one you have is working fine.  The proper way to do it would be the concentration of you in the car, driving it around, etc.  If you concentrate on the concrete question, or simply what you should do, there leaves room for a lot of error.

Also important is that there is no bias towards a reading prior.  It is best to have it absent from your mind prior to the reading.  This is why I usually do a banishing and/or other rituals prior.  (Al I,44;)).
How I do the I-Ching:
-With robe and nemyss and stones layed out in front, I ease into a rhythm of breath(inhale/air, hold/fire, exhale/water, hold/earth) in the dragon asana position.
-At a point just above my head(the bottom of the point of concentration touching the crown of head), what I consider the kether energy center or crown chakra, the question is played out.
-Keeping concentration, I pick up each individual stone(eyes closed throughout the whole operation) and turn them in my right hand until I feel the side which resonates best and transfer to my left.
-Once all stones are done, I clasp them in both hands over my tiphareth center or solar plexus chakra(most equate tiphareth to the heart chakra-I differ) and meditate for a few more moments.
-At the peak of concentration, the stones are cast.  Closest is line one, farthest is six.

As elaborate as that all sounds, it is really quite simple and only takes a few minutes.  I choose to use small smooth river stones, taken from an area that resonates deeply with me, due to their symbolism.  Painted on one side; the moving line is denoted by a dot.  Of course, a lot of this might be superfluous, and one can easily get by if the actual practice is performed properly.

Oh yes, time plays a factor in the readings.  If a situation is meditated upon for a certain time, and in practice played out at another, there might be a false reading as the conditions surrounding the situation might differ and have an impact.

Terence McKenna had some interesting theories relating to the I-Ching and synchronicity--as to whether or not they're true or just speculation though is a different story.

Interesting fact dealing with this subject then im going to bed:
Three things ill bring up the iching, web bots, and the myan calender.  The myan's first.  They made an astronomy calender that predicted the movements of our solar system all the way from the position of venus down to the phases of the moon all the way till current time.  They have been 100% correct to date.  They predict that on the date 12-20-20012 a change of astronomic proportions would occur. They said the earth the sun and the center of the universe would line up(the center of the universe is a black hole) Scientist checked this theroy the myans were correct.  They said if this event happened it could reverse the polarity of the earth which would be catastrophic.
The web bots were created by statition in the late 90s if i remember correctly.  Webbots were a program that searched throughout the internet finding information and compiling it to make predictions.  It was originally designed to predict stock fluctuations.  They ended up predicting the katrina event and the crash of the minneaopolis bridge BY NAME. It also predicts catastrophy on 12-20-2012.
Now to the iching.  When you ask the iching a question it gives you combinations of dashed and long lines alot like computer coding using ones and zeros for language.  These diff combos relate to diff answers found in a book called the iching.  If you do it youll see it will give a pretty accurate or at least relevant answer to your question.  When these combos are plugged into a line graph with the x axis being time going from year 0 to infinite the graph peaks at times when large events happen(rise of the roman empire) and fall during low points(the depression) and the graph ends on the date 12-20-2012.  ooooooh.  And if you got this far good for you. im going to bed.

I don't think you have the idea of McKenna's Novelty Theory down.  The low point of the graphs are extreme events of novelty or newness.  A dip in the graph does not necessarily correlate to a "low point" in humanity.  It is just the graph showing an event that has never happened before or happened rarely, good or bad.

I haven't used it in awhile but it always did seem to help me out.
The texts are pretty obscure and you can draw what you want from it. Who knows though maybe there is more to it than just that, maybe some mysticism to it.
