Looking for input on which I Ching translation I should get and why...

Which is the best most accurate/descriptive and understandable edition(s) in your opinions?

What do you mean by this? The best translated version? Or the best part of it? Either one has branches too like the easiest to read or the most accurately translated? Or do you mean the best part because it is a whole really.

The Willem-Baynes is still my all-time favourite, though it was translated back in the 50s. There have been many more accurate renderings since then, but it's the best for the Jungian archetypal ur-consciousness poets out there. And the hardcover book, with a fold out chart of the trigrams, is just beautiful.

If you're inclined toward mystic hippy poetry, non-sexist renderings of the texts, and more modern interpretations, I've written an app for Android and IOS that does all that. But to be honest, I recommend the book and the ritual of sorting yarrow stalks (not coins!) -- it's a slower, more meditative process.

I wrote the first digital I-Ching app in 1989 (I think -- never found an earlier one!). My renderings are hippy mystic poetry: I've spiced up the 3000 year old wisdom with a little Grateful Dead here, a bit of TS Eliot there, a dash of Thomas Pynchon, some Alan Ginsburg, a pinch of Bob Dylan... you get the idea. I've ported the code to Android and IOS and distribute it for a modest sum. You can pick it up in the iTunes Store, on Amazon, and from Google Play from my website here.  I've also made (shhhhh!) a free random reading page available for friends of Shroomery.org! Furthur!!
