I Ching

A few years ago the I Ching recommended me to put it on my bookshelf until the time was ripe.

Recently I felt the time was ripe and it truly was. What a treasure! For me it is more useful than the Tarot, and I have yet to get a single bad advice.

And you don't even have to believe in "magical things", which is the main obstacle for most rationalists.

If you have a question on how to proceed on a certain matter or what it's nature is, than any of the hexagrams can hold wisdom for you.
If you would let your conciousness choose which hexagram would be appropriate, you are forcing your ideas of what would be appropriate onto it, and by doing that you are introducing concious bias.
By casting the coins or dividing the straws however you are taking your conscious mind out of the loop and the wisdom which is generated by this will get you thinking about aspects of the matter you probably did not consider before, and this provides an opportunity for making wiser decisions.

So whether the hexagrams are chosen by your subconscious, heaven's I Ching department or plain old random processes is irrelevant: in all cases the I Ching can expand your insight and thereby increase the likelyness of you making a balanced choice.

I can strongly recommend people to seriously pick up the I Ching, get acquainted with the rich symbolisms of Nobles and Peasants, hidden Dragons, Gods and Imperial decisions, and use them to your advantage. You need not adopt any "magical/religious" thinking for it to work, just a willingness to get into the symbols and the task of interpreting.

The I Ching is an advisor, and we all can use independent advice from time to time.

Is there anybody out there already involved with I Ching? What are your experiences, how do you interpret things?

Which set do you use? Do you use the King Wen sequence that Terence used? The only thing I know about the I Ching is that each of the 64 hexagrams represents a diffrent element of the universe. To me, I Ching, Tarot and Runelore are pretty much the same--they give divine knowledge that is already residing within us all.

I'm using the interpretations of Wilhelm, Alfred Huang and a local Dutch interpretation. At this point I still find it important to check the interpretations and compare, I'm not at the point where I can look at a hexagram and go from there.
The core of it is how you make it applicable to the situation tho.

There are 64 hexagrams but the total combination of changing lines etc makes it into 4096 different outcomes, I find it way more elaborate and to-the-point than Tarot usually.

Ah I see, so it's MUCH more detailed, less general than tarot...? Easier to get to the "root" and be sure of the interpretation? I might have to pick up a book or two...hmmm... :smile:

The main difference is that Tarot tends to give you a glimpse of what may be as its strongest point, while the I Ching tells you where you are and what you can do to get to your objective, or if it is wise to move toward that at all.

Basically
Tarot = your private sourcerer/fortuneteller
I Ching = your private coach and advisor

I Ching is very down to earth, I highly recommend it!

Woah woah WOAH!

Ok, I re-read my previous posts and feel pretty stupid about the I Ching...

Since making those posts, I've bought 3 books in the I Ching (Most notabably, Stephen Karcher's "Total I Ching". It seriously looks like a Bible...  :shocked:

I now understand that King Wen just took the 64 hexagrams and arranged them in a sequence...and Terence McKenna noticed an artifical pattern in the order of diffrence between figures...

I have both the coins and authentic, locally harvested Yarrow stalks. I'm still learning, and am having a little trouble with the "transforming lines"...

I've used runes with lukewarm feelings. I felt as if the runes gave me a general "feeling" for the situation based on the elements, associated gods/goddesses and archetypal themes. Very generic, very easy to read what you want into the casting.

I have experimented with both the 3-coin and the 50 yarrow-stock methods, and I prefer the yarrow. It takes me about 45 minutes, but I feel as though using that time allows me really permeate the question into my "random" counting.

I have to say that I think the I Ching is "lightyears ahead" of other methods in terms of the quality, quantity, and specificity of the results.

I got goosebumbs almost and moments of "thats SO TRUE" tonight when I did a reading. I noticed that the relating hexagram seems to indicate the current/past direction you have been moving up to the question at hand. Then, the primary hexagram shows you the "answer" along with any transforming yin/yang lines...these seem to be "hot spots" or somthing that really focus the answer.

Man, I'm really digging this system . . .

I've found the I Ching is much more powerful when used in nature,
because it is a holographic map of biorhythms and natural time vectors.

The coin method doesn't work right because it throws off the ratios a tiny bit,
for the same reason that the golden ratio isn't 50%, it's 61.8033989...%.

Because it is in MOTION. It's a four-dimensional code for a 5D brain. (Like DNA)

Anyway, a nice way to get the right odds,
without having to go through the yarrow process,
is to get some marbles of 4 different colors, i.e.:

One Yellow is a Yin changing into Yang
Three Green are a Yang changing into Yin
Five Red are solid Yang
Seven Blue are wide-open Yin...

Then mix 'em up, remove one and draw your line, then put it back and mix em up... etc.

I actually just use identical sticks in these ratios with the symbols drawn on them.
These ratios reflect the nature of Yang to move and Yin to stay where it is.

I was told "Wonder not about the future, only open up to the present."

There's just somthing very satisfying about "constructing" a hexagram that yields so much revealing information.

I'm not sure if anyone that uses the I Ching does this regularly, but I've got a "I Ching Log" going in a notebook. I use it to write my question down and construct my hexagram. This way, I can see over time if my readings are getting more accurate--as well as have a reference for clarifying questions in the future.

Has anyone else noticed mad synchronicity with the I Ching?

On one of my Yosemite trips, a changing line read:

"The _____ has Jade rings"

and at that very moment my friend was twirling a green glow stick on a string, making jade rings...

I use the simplistic computer Iching of a program called 'Fortune Teller.' It is never wrong.

I find saying Iching and Tarot to be better or worse is silly considering that each can only tell you as much as you can perceive.

For instance, I had a freon leak in the air conditioning in the attick, but at that point in time I didn't know it. In Tarot the 7 of cups card kept coming up.

Later I was amazed, but that amazment couldn't happen given my limited abilities to perceive.

The beauty of the I Ching is that this need not matter. Whatever you will throw will be Destiny, and stand in relation to the situation at hand (in fact to the whole Universe). Still, for good measure, a balanced system is preferable. I designed my own, which is entirely neutral as for preference.

As for transforming lines: you always start the reading at the bottom and work your way up. The first transforming line you meet will be the one applicable to your situation. The other transforming lines are important if you mirror the hexagram like so:

Initial hexagram:

-----
--0--
-- --
-- --
--x--
-----

will mirror into:

--0--
-- --
--x--
--x--
-----
--0--

Of which the lowest changing line is the most important aspect.
The I Ching is the finest Oracle I have had the pleasure to work with. It actually persecuted me across a dozen or so readings when I tried to pull a quicky on it :smile:

If anyone has an URL where I can upload 48 megs then I can offer you guys the best I Ching interpretation book I came across.


It is absolutely incomprehensible to me how the I Ching raises so little interest in this forum.

I'm using two diffrent books/translations right now...

"Alfred Haung - The Complete I Ching"

and

"Stephen Kracher - Total I Ching" ...

I prefer Alfred's more Chineese translation. I like how he includes the King Wen judgements as well as a description and breakdown behind the ideogram for the name behind the gua...

I'm eating this stuff up like there's not tomarrow. I'm doing the marble method now for a bit. I like the simplicity, the feel, and the speed at which I can get a main question and several clarifiying questions.

I'm starting to actually take "notes" of interesting or applicable spots in the reading I find...I feel that this might help me recognize when the oracle seems to either be right/wrong about a particular situation.

I'm still partial to my yarrow though. I really like how it takes so long somtimes. I really feel like I get a much clearer reading this way. The question really is sunken deep into the counting by the end of the whole deal...

I've heard straws of un-cooked spaghetti work just as well!

Wow, those translations are vastly, diffrent than the two books I have. I checked number 55, and it's called "Fang" according to Uncle Al...In both of my other books it's called, "Great Harvest" or "Abundance"...hm...

Yeah, they are different translations, but I see a common thread;

55 FANG: Large, abundant; now care's night is done.
Shed forth thy glory as the noonday sun.

First meet thy mate, then multiply thy force.
Be humbly loyal in obscurity;
Let not its accidents disturb thy course.
Mated in darkness - men! 'Tis fortune's source.
Then, call the clansmen of ability!
But pride and insolence slay majesty.

It is advantageous to compare as many translations as possible to get the best reading.
It helps to have read The Book of Lies, Liber Aleph, and Magick in Theory and Practice to understand Crowley's angle.

BTW, Crowley says that any divination will be tainted by one's apprehensions and expectations,
unless one has attained the confirmation of, and communication with, the higher Self. (Adeptus Minor)

i've noticed some amazing synchronicity with the I Ching. i don't know yet, if the answers and advice i've gotten from it has been correct, but it sure has given me some very relevant answers to questions i've asked, and looking through different answers it can give, not all outcomes would be answers to some of the questions i've asked.

i highly recommend giving it a try.
