Aluminum Foil Poll
    #8550781 -

I believe that the general consensus is that aluminum foil is the better spore print medium.

Does anyone think that there is a difference between the two sides?

I'd say shiny because it the slick side the spores should come of easier. Just my opinion. Haven't ever done a comparison.

the surface "slickness" or "smoothness" makes no difference.  The porosity or roughness of either side will be enough that you WILL lose spores- either way you'll still be able to harvest thousands easily by scraping or washing with water.

Why do you ask?

[Quote]Why do you ask?

I ask because I want to be able to trade spore prints without having complaints from fellow traders.

I know that the process of making the foil creates a dull,(rough), side and a shiny,(smooth), side. For some applications it does make a difference.

For instance, if you bake a fresh trout wrapped in aluminum foil dull side toward the fish, when you unwrap the baked fish, the skin will stick to the aluminum foil. This is very handy to know when baking trout.

I , of course, realize we're not cooking fish here, but I was nonetheless curious.

BTW, thanks for the information!

Well, at least you had a reason.  And you're quite right about the fish (cooking in general).  It also makes a difference in the reflection/diffraction of certain types of radiation in some other purposes.  But, in your proposed usage, there won't be any noticable difference.

The shiny side reflects light and heat. It's designed that way in the food industry. Put it on the oustide to keep your print cooler and darker.

The spores of most species will withstand amazing extremes (hot/cold, dry/wet).  However, any extreme will (no matter how resistant the spores) over time reduce its overall viability.  Keep in mind, most spores that are used around here are going to be stored in a climate controlled area (air conditioned house) or maybe a more precisely controlled lab setting/ storage unit.  Don't worry about how long it will store your spores.

Just so you don't get the no-stick foil.  I used it once and the prints slide right off the foil like sand when you pick them up.

Actually, the no-stick (if it really works that way) would be great!  Load them up, print and then fold.  Dump all your spores into a presterilized vial of water.  Draw up your syringe.  Dilute out any way you like.  Less messing around trying to scrape off the print.

I was just thinking the same thing.

It's be so much quicker/ easier and you wouldn't have to make contact with the inoculation loop possibly spreading bacteria.

I guess if you labeled it, Caution: Loose spores. Open Carefully.

I mean for trading purposes.

I probably wouldn't use it for trading but as you just said you could probably get away with it.

I duno I would be pretty angry If I dropped all my spores on my table after going through all that trouble producing them.
