best places for camping in california

I'm planning a camping trip for a few days this summer and i'm trying to find a really nice worthwhile spot because i'm sure there's probably a lot of shitty campgrounds around i'd like to know if anyone here has been somewhere that's especially nice and worth a road trip. 

The only place i've been camping is shaver lake with my parents a few summers when i was a kid.  Its a pretty nice spot and not crowded which is nice. even the lake is pretty empty.

Basically i've been trying to find a place where the natural environment is pre-eminent and where there's much less civilization around than natural terrain.  And a spot that doesn't seem too sketch to blaze and take some doses.

If anyone here could recommend somewhere in california that you enjoyed i should look into as a possible destination, why that would be just killer.

RedWood Forest is cool, Big Sur Forest is also cool. I really been wanting to camp also my self. I need a stream i can chill out next to and liston to.

If you can, I highly recommend the red woods! There are probably over 100 different camp grounds throughout the whole national park. The red woods "park" is easily one of the most beautiful places I've ever been!

Here's a picture I took with my lame camera of this GIGANTIC red wood tree we found.

wow thats a huge tree. redwood national forest looks incredible but i'm not sure yet if i'd be down for an 11 hour drive. at least that's what google maps says.

One thing i love about california, there are tons of different places to camp....


I recently found out about this place>> Leavitt Lake. It is way up in the sierras (9,000ft-10,000ft) off of highway 108, near sonora pass. Absolutely beautiful up there, and isn't going to be crowded like most places. There are many other awesome places off of highway 108 if you didn't want to drive all the way up.

Yosemite has plenty of places to camp, just get on a trail and start walking. The easter sierras, mammoth lakes area.

I've been to Shaver lake a few times, that place is pretty chill i like it up there....

Where do you live?...How far are you wanting to drive?...I know practically the entire state like the back of my hand, my dad did road construction when i was younger so i have been all over the state and know of quite a few places...

well i'm in so-cal so the closer the better, but i'd rather drive farther to find a better spot than get stuck in a crummy campground.  big sur looks pretty nice and i probably wouldn't want to drive much further than that.
