Colorado Camping
    #2950265 - 08/01/04 12:06 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Hey everyone. Some friends and myself are planning to go camping in Colorado within an easy drive from Denver. We want a place that can have a camp fire, and some cool places to go hike around and check out.

We were actually half planning on gathering up some Muscarias because i hear they grow here during this time of year, but again have no real idea where to look.

Can any of you fair people give some suggestions? Some places we were thinking is Rocky Mountain National Park, camping sites near and around Kinosha Pass, and maybe Bear Creek. Anything would be helpful. Thanks guys.

Oh yeah, we wouldn't be eating them on the spot or anything. We've done plenty of research into what they do, we're still very interested though.

And i bet it's so nice during the night over there, do you have fireflies in GA?

my advice: stay away from rocky mtn nat'l park during the summer - WAY too many people, and rangers are real tight-asses.
about 2 1/2 hours from denver on the way to aspen is a place called independence pass that is gorgeous! lots of camping and many cool trails to explore. also check out rabbit ears pass near steamboat springs. closer to denver, look into the rooseveldt nat'l forest, especially the indian peaks wilderness, which has free camping and allows fires in designated pits.
be careful with fires out in colorado. the place is really dry and forest fires get out of control quickly. you can get fined 100,000 bucks for starting a big forest fire.
if you're willing to backpack to a campsite, i can recommend a place in rocky mountain nat'l park called "sand beach lake" the hike is pretty flat & easy, no one goes to that part of the park & it's very beautiful. from there the options for exploring the surrounding mountains are endless.
pm me if you want more info

Grey Rock up in Poudre Canyon is amazing, there is a huge meadow beside it. I am not sure direction at this moment, I'm guessing west but I could be wrong. If you make the climb up the mountain you will be able to see it, it has some perfect camping areas. Not sure about the fire thing though. I guess you'd have to pack in also, not sure if you do that or not.

After reading undergrounds post I'm sure there is alot of people up there but if you are a back packer you could find a nice getaway place.

Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park is known for some pretty strict rangers like underground said.  Last fall a ex-cop turned ranger came to our campsite while we were all tripping pretty hard.  He started bitching about expired plates on the jeep we took up, then he started asking if we stole the jeep.  As you can imagine it's not something you want to be bitched at about on 4 hits of acid.;)  After a while he knew we were on something because half of us were holding our heads in our arms scared to look at him, and the other half of us were trying to have a conversation with him, but his face kept melting.  After a while he left us alone but a few days later when we were leaving he followed us for about 15 miles in his car, who knows what for.

Hrethic, if you take C-470 west to 285 and follow 285 west all the way to fairplay you'll be surrounded by camping and fishing.  Breckenridge, Frisco, and Dillion are all pretty close to Fairplay as well.  If you take 285 about 7 miles past Fairplay you'll run into a dirt road on your right, follow this road  for about 15 miles and you'll run into some camping sites that are fairly secluded.  Bring plenty of water though, because the water pump system is turned off this season for those campgrounds.

That is only one option of many, if you go to REI or a forest ranger office there are always people on hand willing to help you plan your trip.  Have fun

^^^^^^
this man knows what he's talking about. dozens of dirt roads head west from highway 285 into the mountains where glory awaits.

WOO! thank you all very much. We'll probably be going next Tuesday or Wednesday. I think the 285 things sounds like an awesome idea, though the indian peaks wilderness sounds promising too.

I wish i just had gobs and gobs of cash. I'd become a wilderman and live in a shack in the best parts of all the world!

...with my electric toothbrush of course
