vermiculite alternative?
    #854566 - 08/31/02 09:12 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

i cant seem to find vermiculite anywhere... garden supply stores, hardware stores, home depot, walmart... no one around me carries it for some reason. everyone has perlite but no one has vermiculite. this is my first attempt so i wanna try and do it right but i cannot find this stuff anywhere. is there any alternative? can i use the perlite? should i give in and try mail ordering some of it and have to wait a few weeks to get it or what?
thanks
jody

coir will work but i believe verm is way easier; especially the 1st time. my advise is find a store on the internet and get a 15lb bag or something for $22; and its like half a garbage can full (yeah the big ones). agway sells it maybe agway.com has an e-store but youll just have to look dood.

The guy working the garden section at Home Depot told me the EPA banned it... Maybe its because I live in a college town and a lot of kids try to buy it to grow shrooms? Anyone else heard this?

Rumor has it EPA also banned beer, because it contained alcohol (joke).

It is, miss-information & lack of facts, that cause things like this.

I have asked at stores & had a clerk tell me, they stopped selling it, because it was known to cause cancer.

Then, in the same store, I found small bags of it in the garden section.

Miss-information is the problem.

Lowes will have it. Once I went in to the garden section and three people including a manager had no idea what I was talking about. Then I found it 10 feet away on a shelf.

Did you ask someone in the Lowes garden department? If you didn't, then you definitely should. If the first person you ask doesn't know what it is, ask to talk to the department manager or something.

The brand I, and several other people, have gotten from Lowes is Sta-Green. It's a reddish brown bag that sits upright on it's own, maybe a 18" tall and 12" wide... I think.. this is all by memory as I don't keep a bag on campus.

*sigh* yeah. i'm a total idiot. went the other day... and LO & BEHOLD: right there, on a big shelf of flower crap, just to the left of the sliding doors to the garden center.... the vermiculate sat. all innocent and plain as can be.

and now i feel like a moron. lol. so i guess lowe's does indeed have it, and the dep manager is a complete douche-ignorante.

sorry about the misinfo. haha. should have looked harder the first time!
