free book thread?!
    #8526937 -

There was a thread about and some mention of a free book thread. I've messaged 2 moderators (Wronguy and either RoadKill or royer, forget who) about this, and I'm hoping to get some more feedback, especially from you Ythan.

It could work just like the free print or syringe thread, and I think 1 trade rating could be a rule. Or it could work completely differently as someone had mentioned, such as we all send some books and shipping cost to a trusted shroomerite and then we all pick which book we want to read, get on the list. They send it out to the reader, then when he/she is done he can send it to the next person.

One of the mods mentioned there might be some copyright problems, and I couldn't find any though.

This seems like it would be a wonderful opportunity for people to get to read new books, and then even pass them onto the next shroomerite.

Any input?

Sounds like a good idea to me. Like you said, it's a good opportunity for people to read some new books. And I don't anticipate any copyright problems, unless people start trading photocopies of books or something. The first-sale doctrine explicitly allows the transfer of copyrighted works. As long as it's community-run (the staff doesn't need any more work) I'm in favor of your proposal.

That sounds like a great idea. Would there be any limitations, on subjects, etc?

The Shroomery library, the idea of a trusted central Shroomerite to send and receive from is great also.

Media mail is very cost effective way to ship also.

Haha, you deleted it and I can still tell what you said.

Silly goose.

I would be down with this, if I could get the books back.

I was just ranting about how licensing of IP is used to evade first sale doctrine and copyright law rights for the consumer, while still attempting to use the punitive aspects of copyright law in civil and criminal suits- one of the biggest bunches of bullshit ever.

But since I felt incredibly silly ranting about that given it had nothing to do with what ythan said, I deleted it to spare myself the shame

Right on! Looks like this will be a go, so we all have to come up with the rules and regulations. I like MadTownTrippers idea of getting our books back because I'd love to loan a lot of my good books, but most of them I don't want to part with for good. If we do this option then we'll all have a wider selection to choose from.

Possibly we can send whatever books we want to this one person, plus shipping for each book to go to someone else (I think it will be only 1-3 dollars each). When we receive books from this person, we'll be expected to ship the book to the next reader when we're done, or maybe back to the shroomery librarian? We should try to make this as cost effective as possible.

Will this just be in the U.S., or can we do this worldwide?

What sort of guidelines do we need to have, 1 trade rating? 1 trading rating and a certain number of posts?

Will it be necessary to send ones own books in order to read others books, or just send shipping if you don't have a book to send?

Obviously we have to find someone reliable to hold the books, which might turn out to take a lot of their time and even space. I think OMR might've mentioned he'd be down, but I'm not sure.

Or we can go about this in a completely different manner, we need opinions!

I'm ready to get this thing goin, I can send at least a few good books out any time.

Alright, I hear that too man, because with what I'm talking about it wouldn't be a free book thread. If we did it similar as the free spore print/syringe thread, then we all would have a chance to get some cool books.

More ideas?

How about we just start with a book and see where it goes? It seems like all of us here are damn smart and love to learn. SOMEONE will take a free book and put another one up. Im sure of it

That would work for me! We should wait a bit for a little more input though.

Do it! But I'm in Australia...I don't want to think about how much it would cost for shipping. Probably more than the book itself.

Actually the shipping shouldn't be that bad and I think doing this worldwide is a good idea.

The only potential snags I see are people not coming through on their end. What should be the regulations for this?

here ill help you out and list some of the possible problems i forsee.

1.  damaged books, teared pages ect.  if its trade or gets returned to owner i see potental upset people

2. if its trade, i see it would get abused with people taking nice books and then offering "gabels guide to pig farming"

3. alot of people read in the bathroom, over all trading/returning books could be a form of biowarfare

4. if your doing the lead/return thing, alot of people read at different rates and so it could end up being out alot longer than you expected, when you'd like to lead it out again.  so you might need to make a standard time limit.  however if its 2 short, then the person might not finish, ship it out, only to request it again later:shrug:

anyways thats a start of things to think about
