I was hoping we wouldn't have to rule out grotesque/offbeat...cuz well..I like that stuff sometimes...but hey
I've read Naked Lunch,American Psycho and Queer....maybe you'd like Exquisite Corpse Maybe that is too "grotesque" for suggestion though.
I think there are so many good works out there, but it's hard to find something EVERYONE will be interested in. And limiting it to the last 20 years isn't a good thing..IMHO We'd be eliminating some of the best stuff ever. Unless the point is to get something that maybe not alot of folks have already read, making it an adventerous type experience for the group. Then it make sense.
I read weird stuff anyway....maybe I should shut up now

I agree that pop fiction would suck for this. I think the best way to go would be to let everyone vote.

PGE: i think you need to learn to like what 'you' like instead of just 'not' liking what is accepted in pop culture. just because its a best seller doesn't mean its bad fiction...

don't get me wrong; most of what is mainstream/socially acceptable these days is crap for the most part but there are always acceptions: Stephen King is one of those. read his "Dark Tower" series and then we'll talk.

as for older selections: Notes from the Underground wasn't bad, however, i like Crime and Punishment or Brothers Karamazov better.

C.S. Lewis maybe?

also what about poetry? anyone into that at all. anyone read any Robert Browning?

yes, i agree. the dark tower series was/is amazing. king is an excellent writer. although, when his books are turned into movies, the result is complete shit.

Stephen King is a book writing machine. I'm not denying his worth as a writer, but it's not something that I would want to read and analyze. This is because there are not as many layers to analyze in a King novel as say a Barthleme novel.

I've read King and am planning on reading the tower books. But, it'll be cheap, fun bathroom reading, you know?

I know I'll gt some shit for this, but Anne Rice's novels are the same. Fun to read, but no one is winning any Nobel prizes.

I like pop culture as much as the next idiot, but pop culture books are not that great for discussion in a serious book club, IMO.

I don't know. I guess it can be fun to analyze pop fiction.......whatever.

agreed...

however the Dark Tower as a 'series' would be great for a book club. as for just the individual books themselves, probably not much fun on their own. King has mastered the 'big picture' in the Dark Tower.

I don't think you'll get any shit for that PGF, I mean, I love Anne Rice for entertainment purposes But in most cases..you are probably right about the whole anlyzing thing...HOWEVER..if you read her book Memnoch The Devil...it brought out a good bit of discussion in the spirituality/God area for some folks So I guess it's not really a general author issue as maybe just judging individual works...what do ya think?

BOOK CLUB FORUM

I agree somewhat, however, there is a rich rhetoric of writing that lends some authors to come off as more technically proficient writers than your average best seller list author.

Best seller list books are interesting and fun to read, none the less.

There's a book club forum now. We can carry it to that forum if you like.
