His teacher requires it. Their assignments are based upon learning to use a graphing calculator, so he could not do his homework without one.

And there lies the conspiracy.

The Ti83 is old, undeveloped technology. They had repackaged the same guts in different cases for years. Yet it still fetches a premium in bookstores. Where ever I work the teachers, with a heavy majority, dont like using it to teach. However, they are all required to do it by the department.

Why are school departments mandating the use of 10 year old technology? Why does this 10 year old technology still costs upwards of $80 in book stores? (The Ti83 cant even do a symbolic derivative for gods sake) In the end I guess it is easier to teach students how to work a calculator than it is to teach them algebra and calculus. So the students pass and dont learn math, and its easier for the teacher to teach calculators than to teach math. But the end is americans suck at math compared to our technological rivals.

haha, kind of a rant... Ill take HP over TI any day. Graphing calculators are obsolete. Pocket calculators can do quick calculations and computers can do visual depictions and complex calculations.

ah, i see what they did. its so they don't have to get new books. our math books were all made FOR the TI-83 plus, so they'd have to buy new books and do PAID traning for the teachers.

the gov doesn't really care whether anyone gets educated.

I just got my new work laptop and the best thing about it is the screen resolution (1920x1200).  Makes my 19" home LCD (1280x1024) look like Lite-Brite... :frown:

Nice monitors are often overlooked.  I am definitely guilty of this.

2ghz amd, 1gb ram, dvd-rw, 5.1 surround, 4 hds totalling 1tb (full ), dual 17" lcd mon.  Also, I run an older amd ~1.5 ghz machine, 512mb ram, 300gb hd, huge ~25"(?)crt mon; and a shitty dell laptop, intell ~2.5ghz, 1gb ram, 70gb hd?.  The laptop actually has higher specs than this computer, but it's cooling system sucks so badly that it runs infinitely slower.  I never did buy one of those pads for it, but the ram upgrade did prove wonders.

I also keep a computer graveyard that could spawn many useable computers, that I keep around for potential hobbies.

get the fuck out of here, 2tb!?

i nearly shit myself when i was in best buy and noticed they sell 1tb harddrives.
i still remember when 1gig was like a pointless amount of space.

also i re-watched johnny mnemonic recently. whoa dude!, 320gigs is melting his synapses! and he had to give up childhood memories to have space for 160 gigs.

lolololololol

out of interest, if it was possible to quantify the capacity of the human brain, how much storage would it have? I know it's gonig to be loads more than above but I wonder how much it could store, again if possible to quantify it.

A quick google search revels 1 to 10 terabytes, estimated by counting neurons as bits.

Of course we still outperform computers of that storage capacity due to the algorithms the brain can perform on that data. Computer's algorithms are more simple than our brains (for now).

wow, that's smaller than I thought. I thought it would be into petabytes or something, I was thinking along the lines that we're pretty much not-stop, high def video/audio recorders! It will be interesting to see how quickly computers can catch up with the human brain, though i'm guessing that before computers mimic the brain they'll undergo more general biological/molecular integration. (?). I'm guessing it's gonna be more than a few weeks away though! thanks for the info.

So my laptop/techinical mobile phone

Model: Fujitsu Siemen's esprimo v5535
CPU: Celeron 540. 1.8ghz, a fair bit of cache ram (I can't be bothered to cpu id it. I think it's 512kb). It uses 20 watts at full load.
A tiny battery, that still gives two hours of light to moderate usage (internets and films)
Ram: 2gb DDR2, which is way too much, but I'm not complaining.
120gb Sata WD hard drive.
DVD burner!

My games/number crunching computer
PSU: Seasonic 700 watt PSU
Motherboard: LGA 775 Asus commando, with the best, easiest to insert memory dimm sockets I've had the pleasure to work with, besides the DFI lanparty motherboards.
CPU: A quad core running at 2.4ghz with 8mb of cache ram. Which is an insane amount. It was £20 more than the dual core, and as I run boinc, those extra two cpu's become very cost effective. It's got a zalman 8500 cooling it, I did have my reserator on it, but the watercooler wouldn't cool the northbridge and the system was unstable with it.
Soundcard: A hopefully stable soundblaster audigy. If anyone knows good non creative labs soundcards sold in the UK, let me know
Graphics: Geforce 8800 GTX, with 768mb of ram, because 512 isin't enough I guess.
Hard drives: 2x 500gb SATA Seagate barracudas
And a dvd burner. It's encased in a thermaltake shark, which is my absolute favourite computer case of all time.
Ram: Nice corsair sticks. XMS? I don't know. There's a brand on the aluminium heatsinks it has.
