New computer is very loud - Pillows to silence it - Fire hazard?

I recently built a 3.06ghz Intel Celeron desktop to replace my old 1ghz HP. The fan that came with this new computer is EXTREMELY loud, a lot like an electric leaf blower, even inside the computer desks tower cabinet. But I finally got it down to a reasonable sound level by surrounding the cabinet with about 4 pillows, and 1 pillow inside the cabinet on top of the computer tower. I was wondering if this is at all dangerous. The back of the computer doesn't have a pillow pressed against it, so the fan can breathe, but I doubt it's getting fresh air. But then again, I don't believe a CPU fan needs fresh air, does it? My house isn't gonna burn down, is it?

I'd be more worried about the computer overheating.

I think the whole point of a fan is that it brings in fresh air..'
That and I'd get a new fan

Why would it need fresh air? They're not human. Can't they keep using the same air?

The whole purpose of fans is to get cooler air into the comp, I'm (guessing) that pillows would insulate the comp into getting too warm maybe? Shit, I'm not sure, but that's my guess..

Yes, doing that would definitely causing overheating and eventual failure. Don't do that. Live with the noise or get a new fan as Boooooom suggested.

Will the comp just get hot and shut off? Or will shit actually melt and destroy the comp?

Bad idea, it will block the air flow and result in your computer heating up more, which means the fans will have to work harder and things will get louder anyways. Fans bring fresh cool air in and push out the hot air from the heatsink. Your best bet is to find some new fans or invest in a a liquid cooling system if the noise is that offensive.

Make sure you keep the vents clean too. I neglected mine for a while and when I finally cleaned all the dust and crap out of them the internal temp of my computer dropped nearly 10 degrees (Fahrenheit) and that slowed down the fans a bit as well.

I just felt the motherboard side of the computer case and its barely even warm. I don't think I'm anywhere near risking overheating.

Well you have a fast CPU that is going to generate a lot of heat during use so just beware, especially on hot days.
"This table shows that Pentium 4 processors can operate up to 75? C (167? F) or slightly less, depending on the model, Athlon 64 can run up to 65? C or 70? C (149? F or 158? F), depending on the model, Athlon XP processors can run up to 85? C or 90? C (185? F or 194? F), also depending on their clock, and Sempron processors can run up to 90? C (194? F)."

I will buy a new fan. I'm just talking about for now. I need my pillows to sleep with!! I just need something to keep it quiet til I go to bed and shut the comp off. Tomorrow I'll search newegg for a quieter fan.

Jeez man if it's that loud take it back, don't suffocate it! There are many better fans on the market (and even water-cooled cases) get a good one (a friend of mine uses two). A loud fan is probably a sign that it is not working efficiently anyway. Never overheat you 'puter, for whatver reason, many commercially available P.Cs already run too hot anyway!
