How to speed up my computer??
    #4162587 - 05/11/05 05:51 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Well, my MMO i play has been getting really crappy frame rates (5-20 FPS) I want to do something about it but I don't want to waist my money. What do you guys think I should do?

Here are my specs
1.5 gigs of ram.
G-Force 6800
Intel Pentium 4 processor (3.0)
Hard Drive: Maxtor 40GB
WHATS THE COURSE OF ACTION?
You may choose only one
Go buy some more ram!
Just clean your computer up.
New Hard Drive
Its somthing else...

You have no excuse for any sluggishness with a rig like that. I say clean out your comp, F disk if you need to. Also run a spy ware program like xoftspy or something similar. It could be a billion little things just slowing you down.

Good luck.

You definitely don't need to buy more stuff, you've already got more than enough RAM as it is. You've probably got a billion spyware programs running on your computer or something.

Buying a new graphics card may help.... or possibly just reinstalling windows with a clean slate to work with.

It has to be spyware or something... w/ 1.5 gigs of RAM and a 3 gig processor you should have no problem.

Although you may want to get a new HDD, I have a Maxtor 40 GB and it's old and slow... do you know the RPM for it?

I won't list the site (as not to spam) but go to Black Vipers web site. He has a list of tweaks you can implement which really helped with my comp.

If you really need speed (and have some time) format the drive, start from scratch, then add in black vipers tips.

do you have more than 7gb on your hard drive?

i've always noticed (on hd's 20gb and larger) that as soon as they reach 7gb, they get to slowin down real quick. Typicaly, i use a 20gig for my operating drive, and keep a larger drive for storage (you can even set it up to install your programs on that drive as well, but not required). if you dont have another hd, then just burn a bunch of shit to disk and delete it, songs you dont listen to all that much, shit like that. uninstall programs that suck (like ms office, if you dont use powerpoint, or front page, trash em)

and yea, among spyware, you probabably have a bunch of other unnessasary things going as well. maybe do a screen shot of your task manager for us.

if you bought your computer with a bunch of programs on it, chances are you have a gang of useless things running... pc manufacturers just do that cause thier stupid, and dont realize that it only runs super fast the first 2 months before you install your own programs that run on thier own.

although a computer at 3ghz and 1.5gigs of ram shouldnt have too much of a problem, unless you have a gang of shit going and your hard drive is over half way full.

reduce the number of unnecessary services running.

www.blackviper.com is the site to check out to see what services you can safely disable, but it is currently down. I have a copy of his SP2 service list if you want it. This is will save you lots of RAM and increase your performance.

You have a pretty kick ass machine there. What you should do is back up everything then re-format it, then download all of the latest drivers. That should fix everything.
