There are some details not visible to verify the identification, but those sure look a lot like Coprinus micaceus, a very common inky cap mushroom. Here is a list of characters with which you can verify if they are:

1. Cap yellowish tan to yellowish brown, bell or dome shaped, less than two inches wide.
2. Cap covered with tiny, crystalline granules; cap also has radial lines, especially prominent near the edge.
3. Gills whitish to gray, turning inky black and dissolving in mature specimens.
4. Stalk white, smooth to minutely fibrous, not more than 3 inches high; no ring, partial veil, or volva present.
5. Found in dense clusters on rotting wood or wood debris.

The photos and your description already verify most of the characters. You should check to see if there are tiny crystalline granules on at least a few of the caps.

Although the description above says they will dissolve into inky slime, I often find that they can dry out before the process is completed.

Happy mushrooming!

NiGGy, they definately look like a Coprinus but i've never seen micaceus with stems that long.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

they are definately an inky cap. these are coprinus that grow where there is decaying wood matter or on the ground over buried stumps.
sometimes considered edible when young, but toxic when consumed within a day after or up to 3 days before the person consuming this mushroom imbibes alcohol.
symptoms include sweating, nausea, reddening of the face, and possible liver and kidney complications.
do not dry well, tend to deluge into a viscous inky black mess, hence the name "inky cap"
