Help with an ID
    #527392 - 01/21/02 02:10 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all,

A friend and I recently stumbled upon some mushrooms growing in an isolated spot of a park near where we live (southern california, just north of san diego), and they're kind of strange. Wondering if anyone has heard of or seen this before. I'm afraid I don't have access to a digital camera right now, but i'll try to be as thorough as possible in the description.

We found them in a forest clearing, growing in decaying leaves and twigs. It's been a while since the last rainfall, so I assume they've been sitting there since whenever that rainfall was. When found, the flesh was whitish, staining purple to purplish-black (yes purple, not blue, this confuses us) when bruised or cut. The stem is hollow and stringy, and the cap is slightly domed, fading to a brownish spot in the center. The gills were light brown. The stem lacked the thing usually left by the veil. Now, after about a day of exposure to air and drying out somewhat, the flesh has faded to purple, and the gills have faded to a brownish gray.

I've never seen cubies outside of pictures before, but my friend has. He says the stem and cap look like cubies, and that they smell like cubies as they dry. We both agree after reviewing pictures and descriptions from field hunting guides that they're similar to cubies, but worried about the purple coloration, and the fact that they're short and fat rather than tall and narrow, like most pictures we've seen online. Can anyone help us out?

Thanks!

There once was a bud named BC
He grew on a seven foot tree
Then one day I plucked him
To roll him and smoke him
And now I can barely see!

they are definately not cubies, cubies grow on dung.
they arent any type of psychadellic mushroom. some mushrooms bruise purple, red, black, heck, some even bruise blue and aren't psychadellic.
what you have is not a magic mushroom
