Strange ID Request

Hey, I live (and found these) in Humboldt County, California, in the outskirts of a park. I found these today in a big pile someone made of grass, manure, and pine leaves, under a lot of trees (redwood, birch, who knows what else). They were though growing out of small roots, when I picked them. I was extremely happy to find my first amanitas, and now I am having some issues ID'ing them! To my amateur mind and eye, they look like Amanita Westii. Here's a link to them: http://pluto.njcc.com/~ret/amanita/species/westii.html







They turned pinkish when I was washing them, and emitted pinkish juices, and are a pale brown. I have the caps drying right now. They also stained towels pink/brown. The gills are turning very dark, black in areas. They have a very strong odor.

My first impression is that you have Lepiotas there, not Amanitas. Chlorophyllum rachodes (=Lepiota rachodes) looks like those and stains pinkish then brown.

See if the scales on the cap rub off, or if they're actually a part of the cap itself. With Amanitas, they aren't actually part of the cap, although they can sometimes stick pretty well to it.

They are like flaps of skin, with the dark edges on the end. Perhaps you are correct sir. They definitely don't seem like they are gunna 'rub off'.

Origionally they were clearly staining pinkish, and now brown. I think you got a pretty solid ID on this one.

oh i was reading about the cultivation of this specimen and suggest to do a compost pile with grass and leaves.
i guess many lepiotoid mushrooms can be grow as that .this ones can be good edibles they say i have try what we call here macrolepiota procsera also is a bad taxon since only in europe grow the real , procsera , but dont taste as good have any one had good experience with this mushrooms ?

The red staining juice suggests Leucoagaricus americanus (Lepiota americana).

That is a much closer image to what I found. The caps were very folded and ugly compared to all the perfect looking caps I saw looking at rachodes

Red staining is characteristic of a LOT, if not most Lepiotoid fungi.

If we could see the base of the stipe (stem) we could quickly decide if it is or is not Leucoagaricus americanus (my guess is it is not).

If we could see the gills and whether they are GREEN or not,  we would know whether to rule out Chlorophyllum molybdites, another red-stainer.  Based on substrate, I think he might have Green Gills.

I am thinking these are almost positively in Chlorophyllum, my next stab would be C. rachodes.

Yeah, you're right.Hard to say for sure without the spore print/gill color.
