University of Phoenix - opinions
    #8395785 -

Well I saw someones post about the FAFSA (which I just did again) and I wanted to get everyones input about the University of Phoenix.

Im 23, I have a career doing automobile finance for a chrysler dealership, but I see where my potential earnings are capped.  I started a business degree awhile ago and really want to finish it.

I work 55 hours a week and I think online courses at my convenience are a great idea.  I read some mixed reviews about the college though.

I know it has the reputation of being a degree mill - but honestly, thats all I'm really looking for...my resume is great as far as work experience, I'm just lacking education, I only have a GED :frown:

Because I'm only 23, im still considered dependent?  Had to have my Mom fill out the FAFSA as well...I guess I qualify for a $3500 stafford loan, and I have to come up with the other 4100 for the year myself.  Im supposed to start on July 7th.  2 classes every 9 weeks.

Anyone have any personal thoughts, opinions, experiences?

If I were an employer, seeing something from a "degree mill" wouldn't impress me in the least.

A college degree still looks a lot better than a GED.

To the OP: I have no experience with UoP other than seeing banner ads on sites.

However, I believe 23 is either the cut-off point, or the last year that you can be claimed as a dependent. Call your parents and ask if they claim you as such. Did you get one of those stimulus checks? If so, you're not claimed as a dependent.

Yea i guess it is the cut off point, but because of my income, I can either get a loan for the full amount next year when Im not "dependent" or $3500 this year...either way Im still paying for it.

Im getting a stimulus check, but I havent lived at home or had mom pay my bills in years...

Not true.  I'm claimed as a dependent and I file my own taxes.

No check for me

Hmmmm I hadn't considered weather or not they were claiming you as a dependent. When I was enrolling in college at 21 they tried to list me as a dependent of my mother even though I don't know her. I just had to prove that I had paid taxes for the previous year.

Are you working with the financial aid office at your school to fill out the FASFA?

I would be wary of non-accredited universities. And universities that are advertised on television, unless they teach you a technical skill like computer programing.

This sort of program would work for you if you were trying to learn a trade. A degree in liberal arts or business is just a piece of paper everyone will ignore if you got it from this University. My opinion is that this is clearly a scam operation. Nobody will respect your degree and you will have wasted your money.

In my humble opinion, you should try a community college if you can't afford a University. I don't know anything about the University of Phoenix, only that they advertise on TV, and sadly most products advertised on TV do not live up to expectations. Your $3500 Pell Grant would cover the cost of TWO semesters at most community colleges. And, don't forget that the teachers at community colleges make WAY less $$'s then they could elsewhere, and in my experience the result is they care about their jobs, their students, and the world WAY more then the ones who get $$$ thrown at them... It's funny how money can make someone numb...

UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX IS A SCAM!!! Dont do it dude!

Think about it... there is a reason that you cant work 55 hours a week and do a real liberal arts degree, you just dont have enough time. But somehow you have enough time to do a University of Phoenix degree. Thats because it takes no time at all to do, thats because you dont really learn or study anything at all, thats why employers view University of Phoenix degrees as useless (as they should).

I one delivered pizza with an older guy. One day he was complaining that he has to deliver pizza while he has TWO masters degrees! I said, Wow, where from? He said university of phoenix. I had to constrain my laughter. He actually thought that a university of phoenix masters degree was useful and warranted somthing better than pizza driving.

In my time, I have heard dozens of such stories where people lose alot of time, money and peace of mind to this scam of a company. I have never heard one good story about them ever. If you want some sort of higher education, go to a community college part time at night. Spend 4 years getting your AS at half pace. Of course that will require much more time and work than University of Phoenix, but thats what higher education is all about. There is no getting around it.

Save your time and money.

Most colleges also have quite a few online classes available.

I was going to a community college where I used to live, but with my new job, I literally dont have the time to go.  I work from 8 - 7 everyday but tuesday and sunday, I could do 1 class, maybe 2 a semester and then im looking at  4-6 years for my AS degree :frown:  But as it is I feel burnt out, with out even going to school..... I choose an alternative life other than the standard high school,  then college, then career, I choose GED at 17 and then career...Im good at the financial work I do, really good.  Its just that I cant see my self earning more than the 55k a year I make now.  I want to make 110k!  Im stuck in a hard place.  I need to work to support my bills and lifestyle, but I want to exceed and meet my life long goals.  And with todays society, I need to get a degree to pursue my career further.  I wish I could go back to the day I decided to drop out of high school and stay in school, worst mistake I ever made.

Ive read some of the awful reviews about the university, but Ive also read some good un-biased reviews as well......

AAAAAAAARG!

Your not going to make the '110k' you want with any number of university of phoenix degrees. You may make that, with or without a degree, but if you do it wont be because of university of phoenix's education or degree.

Be grateful for the 55k you make now (its one of the highest salaries in the history of mankind). Or learn to live off of less than 20k and do proper schooling for 4 - 7 years. The fact that you even have that choice is a blessing.
