I need honest help/opinions.
    #5770165 - 06/19/06 10:29 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I signed up for the Navy today. Well, I quit my job and signed up for the Navy. It wasn't planned or anything, I just have days sometimes where I get really bored with the weekly routine (IE working at my job). Main reason being I would rather be out with friends or doing something else. So anyway, I quit, and go out to look for a new job. Long story short I came across a Navy recruitment center, took the test, scored very high, and now I'm scheduled to get sworn in (sign my soul away).

Now, without the military in my life, I would be going to a popular community college for my general AA, and then off for my Bachelors in Botany or Marketing. The problem with this option is that I'm afraid I will fuck it up, via drugs and/or alcohol which I regularly indulge in frequently.

If I do join the military I have to get a detox.
If I stay home I have to work in these shitty teen jobs to help pay for college.
If I go in the military my friends and family will be VERY upset/sad
If I join I also have to give up my drug habit
If I stay I might end up a burnout lowlife smoking and drinking daily

I'm seriously torn on this issue. If I join the military the fact that I sworn myswelf in and I HAVE to do it will keep going the full 4 years, but I'm not sure which is the better choice thus far.

Any thoughts or comments?

Military life is good for some...not so good for others. I have heard that if you need a kick in the ass it really does help. But, if you are a mature and independent person the military will completely wear you down.

The navy never engages in combat, and is a breeze compared to other branches. I'd say you made the right choice.

It's a tough issue. If you stick with the routine (which with some effort you CAN change) you can have your partying days and learn by your mistakes that everybody makes, and then get tired of it and move on, be with your school buds until school's over and have no more party influences, and just enjoy it while it lasts. If you go to the military, everything is whisked away, get training in a field of your liking (I believe you can change MOS if you decide you don't like it) and after four years be a respectable member of society, but miss all your party years and have a new lifestyle. I've always been torn on this issue, as their are goods and bads to both sides of the argument. Shitty temporary teen jobs blow no matter what it is, but if you like partying then try to find a decent job and cut back a little bit. Of course, if you join the military, you could find that things are better off. Come to think of it, I'm as confused and torn as you are.

Review what your real goals/needs are and compare them with what you want at this point in time. Things change over time. Hopefully I'm not confusing and irritating you more. I just realized I wouldn't make a good psychiatrist. Someone else could help.

no, yo have to quit, it has to be clean by the time you take your physical

If I go in the military my friends and family will be VERY upset/sad

I'm sure they'll be real proud of a burnout druggie

If I join I also have to give up my drug habit

yep.

If I stay I might end up a burnout lowlife smoking and drinking daily

make mom proud, it's too late to back out now and you'll get good benefits
including better college options and paid tuition

Not to sound harsh, but if you've signed on the dotted line, the Navy owns you for a few years, so the rest is just a moot point. Who knows? You may find your niche in there.

That sounds about right...

I think it really comes down to what kind of personality you have, and what stage you are at in your life. It could be good, and it could be bad...

it's too late for option considerations, you're under contract, to back out now
will instantly get you a dishonorable and possibly worse, good luck finding a
decent job with that on you. the smart thing is to simply go in, do your time
and collect what the government is willing to give. the Navy is a cake walk

But I'm not. He put me into the system, but I never signed anything. I have a packet of paperwork that he wanted me to fill out and bring back today, so I still have options. I have no obligation to them- yet.

I recomend the 4 year tour, it starts tough, 6 weeks of hell, after that you hit A
school and you're home free, live on base, bank your money, when you're ready to
discharge they'll hit you with a re-up bonus that can be as high as $35k just to
spend 4 more years, you'll be doing that as an inactive reserve anyway, why not
remain active and milk the government tit.

Alright, so if I do decide to go, what career should I pursue in it? I like science and electronics. I also love the water. Like I said I wanted to go into botany (after being on this site I have come to love nature and plants). But there isn't anything related to botany or biology in the Navy. When it comes to science there is meteorological work or Neucleor work... I'm not interested in either of those. I was thinking about maybe becoming a diver, just because I love to swim and it sounds better than watching SONAR all day long. What are careers in the Navy that you KNOW people don't get bored with?

Trust me, I can handle going to college with my FAFSA money and living with my parents while I go from job to job to pay for insurence, books, booze, and drugs. Once my girlfriend graduates with her medical degree I can also live with her as my crutch and maybe not even work. When my parents die I can live with my inheritance. All in all I can live a pretty comfortable life either way.

With that being said, I'm not a fucking leech or bum, and I'm trying to make something of myself.

don't make a decision for the next four years of your life based on how bored you are today. i fucked up and did that, but i got lucky and i was "administratively seperated" from the air force during tech school (NOT a dishonorable discharge).

i hated being there, and the day they told me they couldn't give me the job i had signed up for and i could go home was the best news i have ever heard. its a lot more routine than the real world, and someone's always watching you. if you want to find out about being under control, join the military. if you want to have a free spirit, stay home.

Yes you get great perks for being in the military and sign up bonuses are a plus for you, but consider this: your gf will end up leaving you for some Ivy league brat or leaving you because she cant deal with you away, you will be watched over like PurpleKush said and people with a little power are total dicks in the military, your freedom is GONE!, oh yea your on a fucking ship with a bunch of horny-ass NAVY men.

You said your college is paid for by FAFSA and maybe a little by your parents, also if you think the military is the only thing that will curb your responsibility towards drugs think again. What happens when you have a craving and do some and then fail a piss test or blood test; you will be dishonarably discharged and then your Fucked. Also you can chance not having a life of luxury with your medical gf. It is totally up to you, I would say stay and school and learn self-control, it will be hard, but if you do-so and you and your gf stay together, you will make boat-loads of cash and be able to visit the world.

no you won't get discharged if you fail a drug test, you go to Ft. Levenworth to sit in there for however long they deem necessary (could be a long, LONG time). you have to request permission to step over red lines on the bathroom breaks, no talking or communication with other inmates, then when you get out, THEN you get dishonrably discharged, which is as good as a felony.

have fun!

man, what i can tell you is get the hell out of there. dont make a decision on the next 4 years of your life based on a few bad days.

Would you like being given the option of either killing someone or spending 15 years hard labor?

PEACE

:mushroom2:zippoz:mushroom2:

"in times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings - artists, scientists, clowns, and philosophers - to create order. In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption"

dont go to the navy

the "burnout" stage will soon pass, and you will get over alcohol and drugs

then you can go on with your life, knowing you didnt piss 4 years away to do nothing

enjoy life, eventually you will make something of it and find a purpose in it just DONT go to the navy
