That game sucked.

The only good thing I can say is the rest of the team other than our bullpen is playing great. Soriano had a horrible day on his first day back. I really wonder how long Lou will put up with him if he continues playing like he did before his injury. He sure looked exactly the same, if not worse, today. And you have to think Lou is one of those managers with enough clout to make the moves he wants irregardless of the ego or hurt feelings of any particular player. But in general the team is hitting, which is a welcome change compared to other years. And it's impossible to overstate how good our starting pitcher has been so far this year. Zambrano and Dempster have been better than you could possibly expect, Rich Hill seems to be progressing and even Ted Lilly has been rebounding as of late from a start that was unexceptional at best.

But the bullpen, one of our expected strengths, has just been god-awful. Our slider specialist, Wuertz, has lost his slider. Bobby Howry, our best reliever last year, cannot find the strike zone and has been hit hard in nearly every appearance he's made. And our erstwhile closer, Mr. Wood, can pitch well against almost every team except the one we really need him to beat. The lone bright spot is probably Carlos Marmol, who continues to confound hitters exactly as he did last year.

I'm nowhere near the ledge today, although that loss was about as painful a loss as you can find. At home with a chance to win a series against your most heated rival, your ace throws a great game and you take a close lead into the ninth only to have your beloved closer blow the game in an absolutely horrid half-inning of pitching.

But I think this team is good, we'll just have to take our bats to St. Louis and see if we can't keep hitting there. A good outing from Ted "Bulldog" Lilly tomorrow and we're right back on track w/ all memories of this game forgotten.

So lets kill some Red-Birds on the road.
