The White Millet Fiasco!
    #833494 - 08/21/02 03:23 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

After countless attempts with white millet, i cannot produce substrate that will colonize. I have tried adding both water(130mL) and millet(250mL) in a jar, letting it sit 24hrs before PCing it, i've tried steeping overnight then draining then PCing, ive tried bringing seed to a boil then simmering for 45 minutes, draining, rinsing, then PCing. ALways the grain is either to dry, or gets contaminated with strange bacterial ooze that devours grain and has a foul rotting grain smell. In the past i have successfully colonized birdseed, yet i can't even get any spore germination with the millet.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems, and possibly devised any clever solutions?

Thanks,
H

The Raccoon has tried white millet ( ) without great luck. A mix of wild bird seed w/nutient suppliments ( dung/straw juice drained from pasturization) & some brown rice syrup in the soak seem to work well.

Soak 12 to 18 hours, rinse & drain WELL. Load jars 3/4 full -- PC @ 15 pounds for an hour. Then grain/seed transfers. Works great for the Coon.

Try using milo ,you can get a fiftu pound bag at a feed store for like 5 $. I always put mine in an electric rice steamer to cook but not burst and then pressure cookin jars ,no water added to jars.works like a charm, every time.

for millet I chuck whatever amount into a pan, and pour in enough boiling water to come just above the level of the millet, then leave on the lowest heat setting until the water is absorbed, stirring occaisionally.
Then I rinse the grains thouroughly under the cold tap and let drain for an hour.
Pack into jars and leave for 24h then boil the jars for 10 minutes and shake well.
Pressure cook at 15psi for 45 mins after another 24h.
A bit time consuming I know, but it's better to add a couple of days to the process than produce jars of goo a week later.

Milo? hmmm....never heard of that before.

the most curious aspect of my failures is that with the boil, steep, rinse method, the substrate is always too dry after sterilization, even though a good portion of the grains explode during steeping. Conversely, by just adding the "correct" amount of water and grain to jars with no intermediate steps, aside from 24hr rest between preparation and sterilization, yields no bursted kernels and comparatively dry looking grain but results in complete contamination with foul smelling goo that appears to liquify the grain, which has been attributed to overly wet grain by an experienced mycologist. Wet looking grain too dry, dry looking grain too wet? perplexing and infuriating situation to say the least.

Is millet a commonly troublesome grain, or are there other more mysterious forces at work?

Thanks for your help fellas!
H

Try 225ml millet and 150ml water in quart jars. Cover the tops with foil and pressure cook for at least 70min.

This works great, the water content is fine, no bacterial problems, and the mycelium eats it like candy. Last batch done this way, full colonization of the quarts in 13 days.

YMMV due to differences in the millet, but this ratio (rough, mind you) has worked fine for the last 4 or 5 attempts. No boiling, not even any rinsing (but I get the millet as bulk birdseed from an organic shop, so it's got no additives), and few if any burst grains.

Good luck
