Areoponic cactus / Pereskiopsis (aug 26th pics)

So I was thinking the other day... these little bastards love water... and as much as you can throw at it. SO, If they love water, I wonder what would happen if I through in some cuttings into my areo machine.

it's been 3 days and today i'm starting to see roots form.

SOOO.. it seems i'm able to sustain a cactus in a hydroponic solution.

The next project is to graft a seedling onto one of my hydro cacti and see if I might be able to gain any faster growth then soil grown.

I will post pictures and keep you all updated.

Just so your prepared for when it happens, I have to be carfull when to water my perkopsis. If im not the grafts can out grow their own skin and rip a big scar on the side, THey can also out grow their stock if given too much food and water. Just be carful. Im trying some DWC(just for rooting tho) mabey ill leave on in their to do a comparison.

What kind of seedling to you plan on grafting?

Ah what is the point? From what I see with putting the pots in a humidity dome seem to work just fine. If you are super lazy you can buy an digital automatic timer ($30) a rubbermaid container (or hook directly to your water line) and either a pump for the timer or a system that allows water to come directly off the water pressure. Hook up a line to your tray and have it fill the tray with water. Unless I missed something this is the same thing as a hydroponic setup but with dirt instead.

For some reason I believe your hydroponic setup will fail. Possibly I will be wrong. No one has ever tried this. I would believe san pedro might benefit from hydroponic technique, but truely what is the point? The only benefit to hydroponics is not having to use dirt. People argue that it grows faster, which it does but it really is capitalized in marijuana growing predominately. I suppose farmers also use the stuff to speed up the colonization of crops.

What doesn't make sense to me is your taking a plant that grows very fast at least while in a humidity dome and trying to make it grow even faster. If I am not mistaken it seems like the lophoria grows extremely fast on the pereskiopsis. The probelm is when the lophoria gets to large and must go back into soil. If you could figure out to hydro the lophoria we would be in business.

Well perhaps your experiment will be successful. I indeed would rather see a lophoria in a hydroponic setup. Perhaps you will try both methods. It would be amazing to see lophoria grow from seed to full buttons ready for consumption in 2-3 years. If the seedling is grafted on pereskiopis for one year, then goes to hydro for a year then is stressed for alkloid content in year three we might just have a winner.

old posts can still be useful :smile:  but i too wonder what the point is to this.  costs more, takes up more space, involves more time and the outcome i really don't see being any better than soil pereskiopsis...

all the more reason for an update, if he is still around :smile:
