checkout overgrow.com

look into growing in soil first, then hydro once you get the basics down. sounds like you have lots to learn. go to overgrow.com and get started.

Nitrogen is used in larger amounts during veg. growth.

Jono's got a good point with the dirt. More forgiving if you make a mistake.

How many sq.ft. of space do you have? 600W HPS is the most efficient light as far as lumens/watt.

To find out how many watts of lighting you're gonna need, multiply your square feet by 50 so you have 50 watts/ sq.ft.

A 465 blower should cool off a 1000W HPS.

Unless you have unlimited funds, and you want to be able to walk away from this for a week or so if you have to. Then go hydro. Your largest single investment initially, however, will be lighting, regardless of if you choose to go soil or hydro, assuming you built your own hydro system. You will have fewer problems with pests in hydro.

Overgrow.com is definately an excellent starting place.

If you give us more information on your space, we can help you out more with light and ventilation requirements, and maybe a few strain suggestions.

I would highly advise reading a copy of Ed Rosenthal's book "Marijuana law: don't get busted" and following every letter of Ed's sage advise.

Use soil if you want low yeilds and the potential for many problems.

Go with hydro even if you only hand water. Always use less nutes than the bottles say. start at 1/4 strength. Seedlings need no nutes for at all for the first two weeks.

Get a PH meter. You can skip an EC meter untill you build a recycling system later.

You'll learn plenty about your plants this way and get a good result. Growing in a coir/perlite mix works wonders with good nutes, dont forget a few inches of hydroton in the bottom of the pots to help drainage.

Soil sucks.

Soma, Sagmartha, Eddy Lepp, Bog, and Tom Hill all grow in soil and they have outstanding results.

The Berk, Highgrade, & Hull UK all run hydro with great results, too.

The main disadvantage with soil in my eyes, as I said earlier, is pests, but this isn't impossible to keep under control, even using organic methods. The growth rates are faster in a propperly set up hydroponic system, but the flavors are more complex in soil, in my opinion, anyways. Soil is definately more idiot proof, but many many people have never grown in soil.

Another disadvantage with soil is getting rid of spent soil. The best thing to do is to have a compost pile.

The main advantage of soil, aside from the improved taste and greater simplicity, is stealth. If you are concerned about noise, soil is probably your best option. Pumps make noise.

Not if you hand water....ie: no pumps. Hydroponics need not ne automated.

Wormsway is selling bucket lids (6'' and 10'') for only $4 apiece that are like huge net cups with long lips around it to fit snuggly on a five gallon bucket which can be easily transformed into a DWC system.. If you are serious about growing plants, go hydro.

Meh. I still say that if you are attentive with your plants, soil growth rates can come close to hydro. Dude just needs to figure out where his prioritys are. Does he want a high yield inorganic crop, or a somewhat lower yielding organic crop that will probably be much tastier?
