Men, Women, Equal?
    #8320211 -

Today I was yanked into a discussion between a male and a female friend. The conversation started someplace harmless and it all turned to shit after the guy mentioned God and referred to God as "he". This girl was like deeply offended.

She said "well I think SHE is a woman. If God was a man..blah yammer yadda." She turned to me and asked me if I thought God was a man too. I told her that its just semantics. As far as I know, God is not a human being (or any sort of biological creature) and thus has no gender. Maybe people feel weird calling God "it" and it'd just be absurd to refer to God as "he or she".

Anyway, I've heard many women contend that God is a woman. I've heard complaints that men make more money, and theres so many jobs that women can't get hired for. I've heard that men make all the rules and women are constricted to play a certain role in life.

So whats the deal? As far as I have seen in my life, men and women are treated equally. Is there an inferiority complex that goes along with being female or is there really something to this?

If there are any females here among the hordes of brutes who pee standing up, how do you feel you're treated and perceived? as equal, inferior, or superior?

Women are treated worse in many important areas in my experience.

In a sociology class, the teacher pulled the statistic that women make something like 70% of the income of men, and she got super pissed when I pointed out that that gap mostly disappears after adjusting for education, lost time due to pregnancies, etc.

I think that more or less women have it pretty good now. However, even in this enlightened age in North America, women still make less money for equal work, and (depending on what statistics you are looking at) somewhere between 2-30% of all women are raped at least once during their lifetime. Our culture is still male-dominated in many ways, and although women have made huge advances, there is still a long ways to go before we will be truly equal. (And of course, equal does not necessarily mean the same.)

That said, I can't stand women who think they're accomplishing something by getting mad at people who don't refer to God as she or refer to themselves as "womyn" or some such.

It just seems like a lot of women I've been around lately are very overtly proud of being a woman (annoyingly so) as if to compensate for being insecure about being a woman?

It's pretty equal. Men get paid more, women get preferential treatment in all facets of legal proceedings.

Feminism is NOT about equality.

Well, it is, but that's secondary.

Women were thought of for most of human agriculture/industrial existence in the West as only having identities in their sexual relationships to men. They were wives, mothers, daughters, girlfriends, etc. They did not have an identity that was separate from the "man" they belonged to in society. Therefore their opportunities were limited to what they could achieve in the confines of a "woman's career", essentially assisting other men by teaching their children, nursing them or their wives, and assisting them in their office work.

People talk about equality, but feminism isn't about that. It's about respecting women as individuals independent from their sexual roles.

I think assigning one gender or another to God is incredibly chauvinistic. Both your friends are idiots. IMHO, "god" is a concept ascribed to the universe, there is no disconnect between creation and creator. God is a man and a woman, and a wolverine and a flower and a bunch of big empty space.

As far as how I feel I'm treated, institutionally I feel treated equally. My parents raised me and my sister to be totally self-sufficient individuals.

I do feel pressure though. Men I either don't know at all or know very well try to treat me in the paradigm of pre-sexism. They think that I exist to be hit on, patronized, or to entertain them. They don't take my ideas seriously, or they think that what I say is "cute". THIS DRIVES ME INSANE. As a woman I don't get taken as seriously, not by all people, but by a good proportion. I can tell that some men don't even think of me as a human, but they think of me as "the second sex" or "the other", someone fundamentally different and inferior to their status as a "true individual".

Also it creeps me out when people follow me, make comments about my ass they think i can't hear, or (in the case of one guy) ask me for sex every few months for FIVE YEARS.

God has nothing to do with how different genders are treated. That is what human beings have everything to do, leave god out of this one IMO.

my wife was very adamant about the 'feminist' movement when we met. But the truth of the way things work is that women and men do have certain roles in a marriage. While I do cook and clean sometimes, she does too. We discussed this many times. Though when we met she thought it was sexist for her to do the dishes or cook me dinner, she was quick to say I have to be the one to take her on dates, or stand up to people being rude to her, as it is my 'job' as her man. Also, I asked her to mow the lawn during one of these discussions, and she said the same, 'thats your job'. Now, she sees that women and men do have separate but equal roles.

for a good long while she made more money than me, mainly because I was working part time and she was working full time (she still had a higher hourly wage then me), but that was while I was in school. Now that I have a degree, we have switched, she works part time while finishing school, and I work full time. We both feel we are equals in our marriage and that we do have roles. She should cook and clean when I work 45-50 hours a week and she works twenty. I shouldn't have to come home and have to make dinner, then clean up after all of it, and take care of the house duties, when she has plenty of time to do these while I'm at work.

Roles aren't set in stone, but they are existent and work out well. Plus, I think it would be hilarious to see her out there pushing the mower around the lawn, much less getting the weedeater started, replacing the alternator in her car when it goes out, or doing general 'men' stuff. While some women can do these things, most certainly a lower percentage can then men.

women are smarter than men generally.
men are stronger and more able to do physical labor generally.

sexist maybe, but true.

peace

Double standard bullshit, that's like the kind of hoe that hits a dude then expects them to not do anything back because "they're a girl."

Sometimes you just wanna see a nigga slug a bitch.
