eating healthy on a budget
    #8294248 -

i want to change my eating habits but it seems to me that eating healthy cost money. I'm on a real tight budget right now so i just wanted to hear from some other people on how they do it. my budget is around 200/month.

You could buy a big bag of wild rice for five or ten dollars and make it last a month or so. Using coupons would save a lot of money over time.

Rice, pasta, bread, vegetables, fruit, and the occasionally meat. Eating healthy is insanely cheap in the western world, but it requires time to cook and will power to not get fast food.

I eat better when I'm broke.

I suggest beans, rice and vegetables. Stay away from that bagged salad crap though. Chop some damn lettuce, dammit!

200/month isn't much for unhealthy food too.

Hmmm, well, here are some low-cost options:

Brown Rice- $3 for a bag that'll last at least two weeks

Whole wheat pasta/spaghetti - $1.75-3 ... You can also get a jar of decent tasting organic or natural pasta sauce for $2-3.

Chicken breast- $8 for one of those Tyson bags of frozen boneless/skinless breasts. should last 2 weeks at least.

Wheat bread - $2.50 loaf

Frozen fruit for smoothies - $2.50 per bag. Get the berry medley kind. a bag will last a week

whey protein mix - good way to add on some protein to make you feel full so you eat less. This is a bit expensive at first, $14 for a 2lb container, but it'll last a good 6-8 weeks. the Vanilla flavor is good in your fruit smoothies.

Salad- $3 for a big bag that'll last a week, get DARK GREEN mixes. more nutrients in dark greens.

Nuts- $4 for a tin of planters nuts. get lightly salted. a couple of handfuls of nuts throughout the day helps you with energy and to feel full. they also have good fats, like omega-3

cottage cheese- $3 for a container that'll last a week. get 2% lowfat! It'll help cravings for dairy/cheese and has a TON of protein for little calories and fat.

Canned Tuna- cheap, cheap. what? like $1 for a tin? I dunno my roomie shops at SAMs and we have enough tins of tuna to last through a nuclear winter. get it in water, not oil. makes good sandwich or on top of your salad with a handful of nuts.

Fresh fruits and Veggies- Cucumbers, tomatoes, green onions, bananas, oranges, apples, really ANYTHING you like. $10/wk will buy PLENTY of fresh fruit and veg.

Green Tea- $3 for a box of tea bags that'll last a month. Plus it's a lot healthier than pop... and has just as much caffeine. or, you can buy decaf too.

Honey- $2 for a little honey bear. last a couple weeks at least. good way to get quick energy (honey has glucose in it so your body doesn't have to break it down) plus it's a healthy way to sweeten your green tea... or add to your morning smoothie for a little more sweetness and energy.

really, with these staples you can make a lot of good meals.

Pasta and chicken, huge salads (get a light vinaigrette), fruits and nuts to snack on...

every couple weeks spurge and get a steak or pork chops to break the monotony, plus you need other meats in your diet.

I probably spend right at or less than $200/month on groceries.

but then again, I'm one person.

a variety of produce, pork, chicken, eggs and soon some beef

I own a farm, if you have a balcony facing south it shouldnt be an
issue to grow a few things, you could always geurilla grow some
tomatoes, just think of the reaction the cops would have when they
stumble upon your 'patch'

I cannot wait to be able to afford some land and grow vegetables some day. I have lived in an apt. ever since I got a place, and have always tried growing shit, but always fail.

My grandma was a canner. That is maybe a dieing art. She had a hold huge closet filled with jars from her garden for year back. In fact all of my family in Indiana used to can garden food.

Thats a completely different lifestyle then I am used to here having grown up in the city

and learn how to read ingredients labels and what you need to stay away from. the ingredients are listed in successive order of weight so the first ones on the list are always the ones there are the most of. you dont want things like high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, nitrates, preservatives, simple sugars and so on.

Copious amounts of fruit.
Large salads. No ranch.
Water. Not soda, or gatorade.
All the meat you can eat. No butter, very little oil. Olive oil.
Fresh vegetables.
Fresh bread. No butter. Olive oil.

Just try to cut the salts, oils, and butter out of your diet. Introduce more freshness.. like the fruits, vegetables, and bread. Rounded meals.

EAT BREAKFAST! DRINK WATER!
