Naive Rookie Query Re: Glove Boxes
    #8283560 -

So Ive read several teks...some of them mention the glove box plans superficially, some not at all. Are glove boxes recommended even for folks who are only cultivating, or they part of the whole spore print phenomenon? Ill avoid it if I can, of course. Assuming you say, "Even cultivating from a syringe, build a glove box to beat contam!" I then say, "Is there a tek that lays out how to integrate the glove box into cultivation plans?" I mean...packed jars sterilized with foil get placed in glove box...then seal box and remove foil? Or what? Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere; I can only seem to find micro-discussion of glove-boxes, like how to build them and what type of HEPA filter to use etc, rather than macro-discussion describing their optimal usage. And (again, assuming they are used in the syringe-cult. method) what sort of failure rate does one expect if eschewing the glove-box? Im desperately hoping I dont have to wire a fan and all that... Thanks, everybody. Any help appreciated.

If I was you, I would go pick a copy of the book "Psilocybin Mushroom Handbook".... its far and away the best book on mushrooms out there PERIOD. It even has plans on how to build your own glovebox and laminar flowhood too. Really covenient IMO

in the book it says you can build a glovebox from CARDBOARD. IMO you dont need to wire up a fan for your box. Alot of people have a habit of going overboard (myself included....sometimes) but I also beleive in working smarter, not harder. All you need is a box (and a lid)large enough for your needs and 2 armholes cut out.....thats it. A still-air glovebox means just that: STILL AIR. Hope this helps a little bit

Naive Rookie Query Re: Glove Boxes [Re: LouSalt]

I've only ever used a glove box when i had to expose substrate (LC, or other) to 'open air'.

For example, one time i forgot to put in an aggitator in my LC, so i had to use a glove box to open up the jar and throw some glass in, after it was sterilized. Worked perfectly and still no contams to this day (4 months later).

I've never used a glovebox, per-se, when innoculating PF jars with a syringe. But then again, i did it in my small bathroom after soaking the air in Oust and bleach cleaning my work surfaces. So technically, that's kinda like a room sized glove box if you look at it that way. I've never had contams from inoculation, yet, knock on wood!

I would say that if you have a sterile spore print and you want to make a syringe, you should either use a glove box, or turn a small room into one. No carpet floors, no drafts, just very clean, disinfected air and non-porous surfaces. Boxes are so easy to build from large clear tubs, you're probably just better off making one if you can.

Don't make the same mistake i did and build it too small (< 5gal). My hands and forearms fit fine, but moving around jars and stuff sucks big time and takes a lot of time and knocking things over!

The point is to make a place that is draft free and contam free so you can do sensitive work. You don't even need a hepa. That's really only for flowhoods, as far as i know.

Would you be referring to my "don't build too small" suggestion?

If so, yeah, i got overactive on building and didn't measure until it was done. Defo a work harder situation.

How do you get your arms in there? Thru the top? Is that hard to work with, or you you have a low table?

Its nothing but an upside down fish tank on a dresser,I just pull it over the edge enough to fit my arms, guaranteed still air and pretty damn clean as well after a good misting with some bleach solution,I don't think I would have ever beaten the contamination issues I was having before I started doing everything in there
