Be careful. Freight hopping is dangerous buissness, if this is your first time I would suggest traveling with a partener who knows what he's doing. All my experiances with freight hopping have gone pretty smooth, but then again I always travel in groups (mostly because I'm female).

Definitely check out the couchsurfing.com. It's this website where travelers find couches to sleep on. The hosts apply online, add a pic of their couch and location info. They are even able to keep reports on their guests.
If you get a negative profile then you will have a hard time but if they love you then they all love you. Check it out.
