walking from iowa to california

hey everyone. im in need of a little advice. i plan on walking from iowa to california in the next 6-8 months and was wondering if you guys knew of any good websites, books, numbers, etc. to get me started. you know so i can chart my course, pick up some pointers and maybe get some ideas on exspenses.

i will be camping as much as possible so that shouldnt take to much of a toll on price.

mason city. id like to start tomorrow but theirs just so much ground i need to cover before hand. and this just became a possibilty to me like a week ago. thanks for the link btw.

id also like to add, if anybody had any expierience in this even walking a couple hundred mile trek please pm me or something because some first hand accounts would be great.

I don't know man, you may want to start in a month or two. I just talked to my mom who is in minneapolis and she said that it just snowed like last week. You need to be careful of the weather, and start out with some food/money. What kind of pack do you have? what are you packing?? BTW PRIS thanks for the link!

Also johnnyboy, i grew up in Cedar rapids so i know how you feel needing to get out... if you are not prepared for this do not do it. If you just need to get out of IA look into working at seasonal places. like cruise ships and such.

yeah and ski resorts in the winter. nows a good time to do some woofing, i'm sure there are farms nearby or farby if you can afford a bus ticket. with a plane ticket you can go anywhere in the world almost.

for long distance walking, use regular tennis shoes/cross trainers.

you can buy something liek this (or make one urself) and use it to make 2 handfulls of seeds a full meal in a days time. 

empty out your backpack, put a trashbag in the backpack and then put your stuff in the trashbag.  you will have a dry change of clothes even if you fall in a lake.

wear a baseball hat to keep out the sun and for cover your face for a nice middle of the day nap. 

be prepared to have many strange experiences that will be totally incomprehensible.

the world is strange, and this country is stranger. 

you'll walk 20 miles and then turn around, but dont be discouraged, walking in the woods is alot better than walking on roads.  think marijuana and mushrooms in nature :levitate:
