Pasteurizing casings with a PILLOWCASE? Huh?
    #817064 - 08/14/02 09:33 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I've read in a few places (I think in Ryche Hawks teks') that one could pasteurize 50/50+ casings in a pillowcase, inside a boiling pot of water. How does this work? Wouldn't the water seep in through the pillowcase and soak the casing? I don't see this working, but I guess it does...can someone explain this...Is the pillowcase dense enough to keep water out?
thanks.

Yeah, the water will soak through the pillowcase and soak your casing. You then hang the pillowcase and allow to drip and cool.

For casings, my cat prefers nuking in a covered mixing bowl for 10 minutes on high. He feels that the trouble of a water bath is only necessary for spawning substrates, like poo and straw.

No I was talking about the casing material, but since it seems that water will get into the pillowcase and soak the casing material, my confusion lay in the fact that the water content of the casing material would seem to be too much if it was pasteurized. From what I have understood, you mix all the ingredients together with the proper amount of water, right, and THEN pasteurize it...what is the point of that?! You're adding tons more water...I don't get that part....Does this make sense?

Hmmmm. Ryche hawk didn't mention that in his 50/50+ tek (he reccomends sterilizing). I know that dung and straw are often pasteurized in a pillowcase, since it's a spawning substrate and they hold their own moisture quite well.

You're right, though - I wouldn't paseurize a casing material by soaking it in boiling water. That seems just silly.

The excess water is removed in the cooling/dripping process.. ;p

As far as my knowledge goes, you dont want to sterilise the sub because that sort of defeats the object. If your temp is too high for too long then you will sterilise some, or part of your sub, meaning you should start again. As far as I know..... May be wrong but im 97.99% sure.

Im going to be doing this with a pillowcase/coir/verm/gypsum.

You don't really need to add water to ingredients before pasteurising because it will be absorbed during. Make sure you fill the pot and let the substrate absorb as much as it can and then fill again otherwise your water will soak up and you will burn your pillowcase/sub!

Perform the pasteurising of the substrate a good few hours before you prepare to spawn so it has time to cool and drip. You can then check the moisture content by gently squeezing the pillowcase. Too much, squeeze some out.

The only way you will end up with not enough moisture is if you leave it to drip for too long.

Another way is to mix the water before and get to field capacity, then put the sub in jars with foil on as per Franks tek. Check out  "Proper Pasteurisation" you will find it.
