where did you read that they are suppose to get 8 hours of light? i've never heard anything like that before. :confused:

Photosynthesis is a series of light reactions which produce energy.
The light reactions (absorbing energy from the sun) can only happen when there is light, obviously. However, there is a series of 'dark' reactions which are the only reactions that happen at night. These dark reactions are running during the light cycle also. They are running as long as electrons are available.

The minimum amount of dark needed to flower cannibis is absolutely 12 hours. You may give it more if you'd like but IMHO, maximizing the light hours to 12 will allow your plants to produce more energy.

To grow big nice buds you need big healthy roots. This requires a lot of energy and attention to the plants needs.

ya, its not the photosynthesis that happens in the dark period to make cannabis flower
cannabis produces its flowering hormone in the dark, and breaks it down when it is exposed to light
it needs to be in about 12 hours of uninterrrupted darkness before the concentration of that hormone gets high enough to kick it into flowering

photosynthesis is a completely different process by which the plant turns water, carbon dioxide, and light into glucose, which it uses as energy through cellular respiration, taking in oxygen from its roots

I do know of putting plants in an extended period of darkness when transitioning from vegging to flowering. I could understand putting your plant into 18 hours of darkness would then make the plant absolutely sure it's time to start flowering, but then the light was always brought back to 12/12.

I've even heard of going 14off/10on for the last 2 weeks of flowering, but I don't even think there's merit to that.
