LC first attempt, possible contam.. pics included

Hello, my first try with BRF was unsuccesful, and after spring break I decided to try again, this time starting with a LC. I made a honey water LC, couldnt measure the honey but I put just a tiny bit since I read its better to have less than too much. I steam sterilized with durapore tape over the hole and tinfoil on top of that, which I left on the whole time (except for inoculation). For inoculation, I dont have a glovebox... but I ghettoed one up using a big plastic bag (the kind where quilts come in with a zipper on one side) and spraying the inside with bleach water, then wiping down all the tools and the jar with alcohol. I also covered the hole in between my arms with a rag soaked in alcohol. After inoculation I put a new piece of tape over the hole and the tinfoil again on top of that. It has been a bit over 4 days, and there seems to be some dust like particles at the bottom, and when swirled they spread evenly through the liquid making it look a bit milky... From what ive read, it seems like its contaminated... but I dont see how it happened... Ive read about people with worse techniques that have succeeded. Here is some pictures, the first is before swirling, the second after a tiny bit of swirling, and the last after swirling it really good (but never touching the hole).




So what do you guys think? contam or no?

can you get pictures that are in focus? that will help determine whether it's hazy or that you've got small pieces of myc.

I'll try to get some better ones in a bit when my batteries are charged.... I don't know how good I can get them though... my camera is pretty crappy.

Looks like sediment from the cooking process. I'm guessing there's no contam, better pics would be telling.

I seem to have better luck with LCs the more I shake them, especially during the first 2 days. The jars I neglect seem to have a better chance of zero growth. I'm not saying that's the reason, or that your jars are lost, just an idea to toss around, maybe others will have advice. I'd remove that tin foil.

Ok, i got a friend to lend me his camera which is a bit better.. here's two pics.. the first one you can see a bit of clumped up pieces at the bottom, the second has been swirled more and has a small "cloud" looking swirls in the bottom right.

I don't think it's sediments from the cooking... I don't remember seeing the sediments right after steaming it...

I'm pretty sure that's just sugar sediment.

So should I just leave it longer? or should I go ahead and test out a jar? I don't really want to waste any jars since it's kind of a hassle for me to make them...

After only 4 days, I wouldn't count them out. But there's no point in trying to use it at this point.

I'd shake them at least 3 times a day, and wait a little longer.

Thanks for your input, I suppose I'll wait a few more days. I might actually try making a new LC tonight just in case the other one fails. This time I'll try to get the exact measurements of honey/water.

you would have much better results if you would have used malt

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

heh I just decided to try the honey water LC since I alrdy had some honey in my room... otherwise I would have tried something else. However, I've read plenty of good reviews about using honey...

Honey sucks, Karo sucks only reason why people use it is because it's clear, use Light Malt Extract or Light Malt. You'll like it.

Expect contaminants. You can't do an LC without a Pressure Cooker.(period)

If you were unsuccessful on your first grow .... doing an LC how do you think you'll do. LC is more contaminant prone than Aids In Africa.

Step 2: Be successful about it
Step 3: Follow in footsteps of people that have been around and on a scientific level know wtf their talking about. Preferably RR, agar, Roadkill.

Well, another couple days went by and it seems the dusties multiplied... and it doesn't really look like mycelium. I also see some darker spots floating around but I can't really tell what they are. Here's some cool looking pics of it though..
I'm trying a new LC today.. although I have to steam it because I don't have a PC. Hopefully this time I'll have better luck.

edit: I could be wrong tho haha, I'm not exactly very experienced, let me know what you think.
