hmmm well i just finally reinstalled windows thanks to your help and with out too much surfing and downloading updates for windows i have a bunch of spywares and trojans already and i just keep getting pop up pages, any tips on where i can download a good "free" spyware/virus removal system, the cash flow is a little low at the moment, t'would be much appreciated

spybot search and destroy

Ad-aware

Ccleaner

Avg free anti virus.

Install all those and you should be good. Id reccomend running the scans all in safe mode.

Completely wrong. It's been in multiple pc magazines that AVG free is one of the best and not long ago the best anti virus. Ive NEVER had a problem with AVG and I do a lot of things I shouldn't be doing on pc.

I agree. Even with access to hacked professional virus scans, I still stick with AVG free.

AVG doesn't stand up to any paid program Ive EVER had. Not even close.

paid virus defense program manufacturers create new viruses to keep their business alive.

every one of these threads... the token guy has to come in and say use linux. Yes, let's change our OS and learn programming to get rid of a few viruses.

FYI... Linux has it's own set of spyware, viruses, and malware, written specifically for Linux. You rarely hear about these, because the VAST majority of people use Windows, and not Linux. Thus, the vast majority of viruses, malware and spyware are written for windows. Using Linux or Mac does not make you immune. It just makes it less likely.

A little common sense and some prevention is all you need to never get malware and viruses in the first place, windows or no.

that's ridiculous. source code has bugs, yes indeed. but windows and linux have very different security standards. with windows a typical home user runs with administrative privileges, so malware is installed without question. linux is fundamentally different by forcing a user to use super user privileges in order to install software.

viruses don't happen with linux because the software is peer reviewed and it uses a more stringent security policy

OP... I don't know what websites you are visiting to get a bunch of trojans and crap so quickly.... but firefox + adblock + noscript is your friend. Use that as your browser.

You forgot to mention the fact that the "typical home user" can barely figure out how to operate a computer, let alone run Linux.
An experienced Windows user can keep his computer just as safe.

man I don't want to hijack a thread. linux is more capable than windows even for inexperienced home users. there is no need to think about malware infesting the holes of your OS. there's not a bunch of programs running in the background annoying you with popups everytime you want to visit another web page that runs a script. I could go on and on here, but I'll spare you, the resident computer expert, with the gory details.

I shouldn't have to mention the cost benefit. Unless of course, you pirate all the glorious proprietary software you use.

My advice is to use ubuntu linux. I'll give you a list of reasons:
1. it's free.
2. there's thousands of packages available at the click of a button
3. there's no need for expensive malware prevention software
4. there's a quarterly release cycle so your OS is up to date with the latest security and bug fixes every 3 months
5. it will handle all of your multimedia formats
6. there's excellent community support for all things unconventional
7. it's the most stable operating system ever developed. reboots are only required if you update the kernel

any antivirus/antispyware program is free. it's called bittorrent
