What do you use? I'm looking for one that is free and effective.

I rarely use them, I tend to be quite careful with what I install
and use a damned good virus scanner, check my journal for the anti-virus

I've been told to use 'Spybot Search & Destroy', as well as 'Ad-Aware SE Personal' together. Just make sure you update the definition files frequently. Both are free well known programs.

they're also very effective, may of the 'remover' programs are actually spyware, as soon as you buy their crap it'll delete the free version

This is what I use as well.

Those two together work great. Run Ad Aware first and then follow up with Spybot. That's what I did when I used them anyway. Not sure why but I must have had a reason that I don't remember. lol I've never had a need to look any farther at free ones. Very thorough. If some other "free" application you installed depends on it's spyware to keep working then you may lose it. Good riddance I say but, if it's something you really like you can always exclude it from removal.

Spybot's a crock of shit.  It finds the SAME shit every time, and if you do a scan right after you do a "removal" it finds the same shit all over again.

Bom, use Nod32.  You can get it free (if you know where to look ).  I've installed Nod32 on a virus infested computer and as soon as it opened it immidiately started weeding trojans and junk out of the system.  I don't even use antispyware and my PC has been clean for years.

I have:
Ad Aware
Spybot Search and Destroy
Spywareblaster
Windows Defender

And AVG as my anti-virus. A good combo that's caught everything that's been thrown at it.

Thanks for the input, bitches. Very much appreciated. I'm going to check out AVG too. I am currently using McAfee for virus protection which I find really slow and kind of sucky.

Time to clean up the mess!

The free version of avg really is good stuff as long as you keep the definitions up to date... just used it to get a nasty trojan dropper off a friends computer.

True too often but, not the case with Ad Aware and Spybot. That is why I and at least one other recommended it. Free, easy, and effective for anyone.

Stay far away from Norton and Mcafee.. they are bloated pieces of shit that do almost nothing.

AVG, Avast, F-prot, NOD32.. all top notch.

As for spyware programs

Spybot S&D
Spybot is a scanner. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have at least one malware scanner on your computer. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.

Ad-Aware
Ad-Aware is another good scanner. It serves basically the same purpose as Spybot, but it can sometimes find things that Spybot does not, and vica versa. I recommend having both on your PC and running them from time to time.

WinPatrol is a program that monitors your computer and notifies you if there are any unauthorised changes made to it. It gives you the option to allow or forbid the changes, thus guarding you against Malware installations, Browser Hijacks, and the like. I consider this one a must have. In addition it allows for easy changes to disabling startup programs.

SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes "kill bits" in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.

Norton uses up WAY too much RAM for it's own good, and McAfee is the AV that I see on the most infected computers at GeekSquad. It doesn't do it's job.
