hey bi0! i am seriously considering installing linux on my pc... if it's not this one it will be installed on my next pc which will be purchased pretty soon...

i have some questions though... what about the typical microsoft programs? like office and such... are there free alternatives that run .doc and .ppt files? i'm still in college and i need these programs for presentations and whatnot... what about messenger? i know firefox and thunderbird are available so that should be no problem...

anyways any feedback is appreciated

you can find nearly any program that you can think of for free for linux. I havent used linux in years but am building a nix box preaty soon. Being a total linux n00b i feal that I should dive in head first as thats the best way to learn things in my oppinion. Poeple fear linux becouse its unkown. But I found mandrake hella easy to use back when i was in 9th gread. so i think that i can get it to work now.

This is the linux that i think that i will try it is based on the most powerfull linux on the market but has a easier installtion.

[qoute]So, what's the difference between RR4/RR64 Linux and Gentoo GNU/Linux? Nothing, they are 100% the same thing except that, with RR4/RR64 you have a powerful, big, amazing, cutting edge, 5-clicks-away-O-matic installable LiveDVD.

In fact, the standard Gentoo installation and tuning processes, could take many hours or even days on slowest Computers. So, jump into the world of RR4 and RR64 Linux without losing your love for Gentoo GNU/Linux. Isn't that a powerful freedom?[/qoute]

Using your HOSTS file to block connections to malware vendors is a good, quick and easy preventative step that will cut down on how much spyware you get.

The installation isn't the tricky part, the tricky part is getting simple things like dual monitors or dvd's to play.

dvd playback is easy to do. just install libdvdcss2 and enable DMA if necessary - takes about 2 mins. I can provide easy instructions. Or someone like ripple can easy use automatix that will install everything they need without having to learn how to do it themselves.

I dont think ripple has to rock dual monitors.

what do you mean by "sample a song from allmusic"?

yes. openoffice and abiword (and plenty of other applications) can read/create such formats.

gentoo is the said to be the most powerfull linux distro on the net. http://www.lxnaydesign.net/ rr4 is just a easier way to install it something like a 5 click install verus http://www.gentoo.org/ long install. I have heard that some times gentoo can take 2 hrs to install.

I'm sorry, but that doesnt make any sense. first of all, gentoo isnt the most "powerful" whatever that means - it is just customized for your own hardware by compiling everything. so if gentoo is "powerful" that is how it gets to be that way. Now, how exactly is this distro just as powerful as gentoo if it does not take the same compile-from-source route and "only takes 5 clicks"? Sounds like gimmick marketing to me.

check out distrowatch.org and read about other distros...there are some solid distros out there that you'd be better off using.

 no probs

By the way, the only issue I have with that hosts file is that sometimes, when I do a google search, I see a "sponsored result" (i.e. an advert) I want to click on. Because the hosts file blocks the google ad servers, some of the sponsored results won't work.

If you want to be able to use google sponsored results, just open up your HOSTS file with notepad, search the file for "google" and comment out (put a # symbol at the start of the line) all the entries that include the word "google".

If you'd rather keep it simple and you trust me, you can just DL the HOSTS file I attached with the google entries commented out.
