Re: Family sues friends of alcohol OD 'victim' [Re: Icelander]

It might be the child's unconscious attempt to remove herself from her family, but it's a dumb way to do it.
I am in no way judging her, but I am saying that there are more preferable ways to do that. Like simply growing apart from them.
I am aware of the fact that she was somehow predisposed to such a circumstance, but 21 can be considered an age where one already has an amount of personal experience which can allow one to start making rational choices.

I don't think we can always appreciate the way a psyche will choose to deal with depression. She was young and inexperienced emotionally. Considering this, the unconscious rules.

I sometimes suspect the pressure is worse for each generation. We are so far detached from a natural life that the psyche wants to flee.

What I want to see on a conservative news station:

Anchorman with tailored suit, short hair and tie to co-anchor: Ya know Jill, if she had merely smoked marijuana with her friends, it would have been impossible to toke herself to death and that lovely girl would still be with us today! *shakes head sadly*

Hot blonde co-anchor in tight suit and exposed cleavage: Yes Dave, we Republicans believe in LESS GOVERNMENT, so why are adults only allowed one legal psychoactive and highly toxic substance - alcohol?

Dave: I don't know. It certainly doesn't make sense.

Jill: In other news, the War in Iraq's total budget has exceded 5 trillion dollars. Experts claim no relevance to plummeting dollar, rising oil prices and worst recession in decades...

The first time was on my 7th birthday. I ran out into a very busy street with my eyes shut. I was run over by a car and the bone in my leg stuck out several inches. I definitely wanted out of this world but it was unconscious at the time. Much later I realized that I had chosen it deliberately. But of course failed.:(

Well, that simply depends on the nature of the personal experience and whether or not it allows that. I'm not sure what the exact formula is that brings one to make rational choices, but I don't think it is too prevalent. Its hard to hold someone accountable for something they aren't capable of, even if it is, ultimately, their responsibility.

No one to blame here but the parents. They failed to raise a child that knew what she was getting into. Its pretty sad that they conditioned their kid to kill themself.

how can you say no one to blame but the parents? that is rather closed minded. if i, as a full adult, go drink a bottle of drano and die, is that my parents' fault or is it my fault?

i think if you are of the mind set that the blame has to be placed on one party, then the girl is the most logical person to blame.

i don't think some of you realize how dangerous liquor can be at high doses, her parents may not have even realized it. it's not necessarily a question of her not knowing alcohol could kill her, but like someone else said she would have blacked out. in other words, once she was already intoxicated, she could have lost the ability to accurately judge how much she was drinking and lost track of how much she had consumed, not even remembering having taken her last drink. if you ever watch people who are extremely blackout drunk, they are not in control of themselves and they are a danger to themselves and others.

now obviously, you can say it was her fault for drinking to the point where she lost judgment. but i don't understand how you can blame her parents for that. if you really want to explain what happened, you can place blame on her, her parents, the bartender, alcohol and society itself for failing to educate her on the dangers. her death resulted from a complex interaction of all of those factors and it's not fair to single out one of them and put all the blame on it, although like i said earlier, if you're dead set on singling out one factor to put the blame on, i think it has to be on her.

anyway, i think her friends and the bartender were morally responsible to stop her. if you see your friend unknowingly overdosing on alcohol, and you don't act to stop them, then i think that's being a pretty poor friend. however, if i were a judge i wouldn't award money to anyone in this case. being a bad friend isn't exactly criminal.

My intention was not to hold her accountable as her life is (well was) her life.
However, this doesn't stop me from actually observing that there are smarter ways of getting out of situations like these. In fact, I think it's good to outline them because it might serve as an example for others in similar situations.
What brings one to make rational choices is life itself. We all make use of reason, even if some do it more than others.
Even if it was a moment in which she felt the need to get away from her problems, maybe if she would have been more present and looking out for her best interest, the things would have turned out with a lesson learned. Maybe she was capable of that. The fact that she died in a dumb way doesn't necessarily mean that she was unable to live a fulfilling life.

The girl's parents are two individuals who have the responsibility of raising the girl in a manner that ensures she is capable of making reasonable judgements and preparing her for venturing off into life as an adult. Clearly, this is an ideal that is barely achieved. Why is it that they had not instilled within her a sense of judgement that would ensure she would not carelessly throw away her life?

In the ultimate sense, only the individual can make decisions for themselves, but there is no denying the responsibility these parents had in giving their child what they needed to get past twenty-one. The fact that they are so desperate to place the blame on other people who play a much less signfigant role in the course of her life demonstrates that they feel guilty for their own failure.

The responsibility was the girl's for her actions. Now whose responsibility was it to ensure that the girl could take care of herself? The parents. Not the bartender's, not her friends, not society - certainly not alcohol.

while i understand your point of view better now, i don't necessarily agree with it entirely. lots of people with very good parents go on to make poor decisions in life and even the best of parents can still make mistakes in their parenting.
