Tumor like growths on cakes....HELP!!!
    #808146 - 08/10/02 02:50 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

There are some really strange tan colored tumor like growths on a few of my friends cakes. It looks like a different species of fungus he has never really seen anything like it. Strangest thing is that the cakes are still pinning. Some of the growths are very large and others are smaller....anyone have any clue what is going on?

sounds like regular primordia? does it have a bulbous shape? sometimes a cake will grow basically bulbous 'primordia' which essentially is mushroom flesh but in that strange shape

it does look like mushroom flesh however some of the growths have become enormous in size and the color is different from the other primordia, some have become irregularly shaped...

what strain? may be sclerotia....the mycelium makes these to store food. (i think)

I posted on this months ago. About a possible new strain. What kind of spores and did you get them from a vendor? It is fine to eat them. I have. When i broke up my cakes i found the same growths inside. It was sclerotia from all i could determine.

The spores are tazmanian from a vendor...the fruits look like regular tazzies...then there are these bulbs growing on the cake as well...rhizos are growing right up to and around the bulbs...

also, if you determine that the growth is sclerotia, you can actually eat that too i have never had it but there is a good bit of information about sclerotia out there. this is a picture from sporeworks.

is that something like what you have?

well it is heard to tell from that pic with them smashed up against the jar like that...but what have may resemble that but growing off the cake in open air. Since the cakes went into full fruiting mode the growths seemed to stop enlarging....ill try to have a pic of the harvest plus the growths later this afternoon. Will sclerotia form on with cubensis or what? These are definitely tazzies....

Well I have some good news (I think). My friend pulled some of the shrooms off and one of the fleshy growths....this thing was bigger than any of the caps he harvested and amazingly it stained blue. Should he eat it? Maybe this is common phenomenon but in my countless hours at the shroomery I've never seen any pics or heard of anything like this....

ah.. this never gets old...
"Its naat a toomah!"
without pics it is difficult to say, but it is probably fine (retarded strain or just sclerotia)
