1/2 pint cake that produces only aborts.....update

heres a lil problem i encountered on this my first grow..... on one of my 1/2 pint cakes, of Mazatapec, all i glt out of it so far are about 5 or 6 aborts, while the others are flushing nicely? any ideas as to why this is? they were all birthed at the same time, and all dunked for 12 hours prior to birth? is there anyway to jump start this baby, or is it just lagging behind?

Nah, the humidity might be a bit off, or you might not have enough air exchange. Try to keep the RH% close to 100% (perlite and misting) and fan them more often. This should help.

Understood.  You have to take into account that it's a different strain and might prefer slightly different conditions.  There is also the chance that I am 100% wrong.. :grin:  Still, I think that keeping the humidity up and fanning will do wonders for you.

Could just be a crappy cake. Maby dunk again and hope for the best. At least that isint the only cake so you will be coming out with something.

ya, im not at all disapointed..... in fact, i had 12 jars none contaminated, i was expecting a couple losses.....infact, had to make my growing chamber larger to acomodate all the cakes.....so i am very pleased....ill just give it some time, maybe play it some pink floyd :grin:

ok..... got something going on here...... k, so 5 shrooms, all looking to abort, well 2 did....one got a huge growth spurt, about 3 inches over night, this guy is gonna be big, looks like an overgrown pin! the other two, looks liek they might be recovering, the grew a little bit, but have what appers to be a "tumor" growing directly on top of the cap. it is lighter in color, a kinda milky tan color to it.... i was messin with it, it feels like shroom material, and bruised blue almost instantly upon touch, so i figure its just some kind of mutant malfunction or somethin? who knows, this cake must have been lacking some nutrients or something, what do ya think? no new pins as of yet wish i had a cam......  kinda cool though :grin:

hmmm not sure about the growth, after reading your post i pulled out my handy TMC and took a look, because i remembered seeing a tumor like abnormamality pictured in the book.  on page 152 fig. 139 there is a growth called a rosecomb which looks like a tumor.  it says it is caused by contact with chemicals, espically those that are petroleum based??  dont know if that helps at all but just wanted to let you know!  good luck and let us know how you make out! :wink:

Yeah that is a rosecomb. A couple of my mazzies had some of those on their caps. Darkmoon is correct, it has to do with something petroleum based.

Make sure growing tank does not smell of cleaning chemicals , too much risidule from chemicals i.e. lysol , bleach etc . Can cause mutations , in your case you may have one cake that is more in contact with chems or just more sensitive than the others .

thanx for all the replys..... not too sure about the rosecomb, i mean, unless there is some other cause for it..... i have not used and cleaners on it other than anti bacterial soap and water, and made sure i rinsed it well.....could it be possible that the cause was in the syringe? it is pretty cool though..... it seems like the one giant pin mushy it hogging ALL the nutrients... it is growing at an incredible rate, and the inmature cap is starting to split due to the stresses from the rate of growth, it is about 7 inches high, and close to 3/4 inch thick, the tumors seem to still be growing......they are safe to consume right? this is one messed up cake, got 2 aborts, to retards and one super shroom! :grin:

well this is my first atempt, and i am a pecimist to the extreme...... i was just assuming the worst case senario...... i used a pressure to sterilize, and followed the PF tek to the letter, so i am happy. i guess i was just prepping myself incase i did have some contaminate, now my only problem is keeping up with all the flushes and dunks.....i think this is my last time working with cakes...... seems my success has givven me new confidence and now i am going to tackle a few casings with some puerto rican and T3 spores i will be getting from a friend......
