Building essence/presence.

It has come to my attention that I am often an unconscious mechanistic reaction instead of an aware being centered in myself. One technique I have found to improve this is a leaning back into my body, almost like I stand behind myself and my attention encompasses the whole body. However this is hard for me to hold onto.
What I am looking for are different techniques that have worked for you. How do you inhabit your body?
Are people who are able to control themselves on moderate to high doses of psychedelics (that is maintain a direction and purpose), of a higher essence (inhabiting more presence)?

Breathing techniques, but what is most effective for me is to become more aware of my surroundings. The eyes by far obtain the most sensory information of reality for us, and it is possible to direct more consciousness into perceiving this sensory data. I could only describe it as a kind of focus that occurs, but I'm not sure exactly what sets it off. I think the important thing that happens with this is you actually gain a sense of the space that exists.
Regarding the psychadelics, most of my trips have been far beyond my normal experiences, so I don't see much purpose I carry into it, at least not consciously. I have noted, however, that through the last time I took mushrooms, upto the last time I had a very potent 'cid trip, I began to feel secure in being while I'm that aware, affirming that the universe is benelovent and that I can relax. I feel that a lot of my last trip has been integrated, and my life has changed signfigantly since then.

Great stuff. I think I know what you mean by using your eyes. Is it more like feeling or listening with the eyes as opposed to looking outwards? Every time I do this the walls start breathing and lightshows occur. Maybe I'm going about it the wrong way?

No, that sounds like a good description of what should happen.

I will try to keep it up then.
Another thing that seems beneficial is to move economically. I try not to move any limbs too much and resist all those urges to scratch or distractedly move arms or legs around. When walking (or moving in general) it may be a good idea to do so more slowly than what feels natural.
Someone recommended me to become very hungry and then put a bowl of food in front of me. Then by resisting to touch the food one gains more control of the mind and the impulses of desire.

building a sense of presence or awareness that lasts more than 3 seconds is a great work, but you need a light heart, and you need to be resilient about the "disconnects" the "disconnects" are less disconnected than you might imagine at first. mind operates by association, the next thing fills the field of attention and the previous thing fades away. it only seems disconnected if you were holding onto something that faded.

Just rose from a sitting and my heart feels light.
Someone recommended to spend time to play with different patterns of breathing. Not forced, just light intention. Different patterns give rise to different feelings, and I find that certain very soothing patterns produce an inner bubbling. I was told that it is good to keep the breath that creates lightness (joy) because mind will draw towards it with less resistance if there is reward.
Aren't you supposed to hold onto what faded? I try to focus on tip of nose often, but am uncertain whether to feel the air right outside the nostrils or the actual tip of the nose. It is hard to find latter point (my nose is long, ive pranked too much).
It is interesting to observe how scattered attention can be and delightful to put it more at ease.

A technique for increasing or training peripheral vision:
Stare straight ahead and see the whole field of vision as a circle. Without moving your eyes you put your attention at the very edge at the top (12 o'clock). Very slowly trace the outer edges (remember not with eyes) clockwise a whole circle. When you reach back to 12, turn around and trace the edges counterclockwise. Back and forth. That is a very straining exercise if you do it with strong concentration.

letting go is more important than holding on at this juncture, in the meditation mind set, in the practice.
rather than capture you are in the process of liberating. re-acquainting with the self, and freeing it from habituation. note this is not an absolute task it is a middle way, never finished, and never extreme, always gentle liberating and healing.

So where would you put your attention? Not at a point, but behind the passing clouds?

focus your attention enough on anything long enough and a gap, space or presence can occur, for some breath works best and others maybe a flame will work better. once the gap occurs i like to focus my awareness on the gap and it will feel as though awareness is expanding.
