I've been listening to Janis lately

and I've come to the conclusion that there's no way in hell she could have sung like that sober.

some of it she was but she did like her southern comfort.

I really dig janis, i think about her alot while im in golden gate park for one thing or aother.

you should read Love, Janis, by Laura Joplin. Its really a great book and the coolest thing is that it has a bunch of letters written home by janis while everything was going on. I couldnt put it down for days.

Thanks. Who is Laura Joplin?

My mom was a major Janis fan. I have all her albums. Unfortunately I no longer have a record player.

her younger sister. so its her entire life pretty much lots of childhood stuff.

www.officialjanis.com

this is their official site they have a message board there with a active but small community of extremly loyal fans plus Janis's younger brother is the admin.

Its really strange though. They are really antidrug considering the lifestyle Janis had.

What's your favorite song?

I have trouble choosing between Get It While You Can, Move Over and Try.

I've read that Janis and Jim Morrison a couple times got piss drunk and abused the shit out of each other.

That would make for some great film documentary if it were available!

Probably a little too much ego with insecurity laying behind it.

If I got drunk with Jim I can't imagine fighting with him. Of course I probably wouldn't want to talk much.

I've noticed sometimes when you get two good singers together or two good guitarists there's a little bit of tension. Not always but often enough.

Big Brother and the Holding Co. were performing a few weeks ago in Woodstock, but I couldn't make it. I heard the female vocalist did a good job recreating Janis' style...

Well she gets props from me then.

Janis is the hardest person I've ever tried to do. No matter whether others say they like it or not, I'm never satisfied. I was trying to sing Get It While You Can this week and it zapped every bit of my confidence.

THere will never be another Janis.

The sound of one's voice is a result of the shape of their being. You can't expect to sound just like her, ever. Because you don't have her form. True expression of the voice comes through finding your natural sound and letting it come out. Some have an extremely bizarre natural sound as a result of their lifestyle choices.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is... instead of trying to sound just like her (impossible) why not go ahead and pay homage to the artist by presenting her work through your own sound? I believe one of the greatest respects you can pay to a musical artist is to cover their work in a unique way that is still true to the artist's emotional and spiritual intention.

Just my 2 cents. No one will ever sound like Janis except Janis.

But NO ONE will EVER sound like YOU except YOU, either. Embrace your sound. It is your very spirit.

P.S.

There will never be another you, either.

That really was nice thank you Jacques.

But that song, I love it so much and know better than to just try to copy her(impossible), but even the spirit along with the tempo, damn it's hard!

But I love a challenge!

I'm gonna have to come back to this thread whenever I get discouraged and re-read it.  Made me feel better.
