Hello all,
Recently motivated by my success with the PF TEK *(pics coming soon), and also by NightTrains success with Scotts 3 n 1....
I purchas a 40lb bag, and i think i got the mix just right... the moisture is just enough. Ive inocculated 2 so far with homeade spore syringes. ... i did that yesterday. Anyone know generally how long a full qt jar of compost takes to colonize... oh ya i left enough room in the jars so the substrate should be mixed well when i shake it periodically.
This is what im working on:
2 jars plain cow manure compost from krogers (50 lb bag 99 cents)
2 jars scotts 3 n 1, and verm mix (70/30) and plain water 2 jars scotts 3 n 1, and verm mix (70/30) and oatmeal tea 2 jars scotts 3 n 1, and verm mix (70/30) and superthrive tea
2 jars scotts 3 n 1, and verm mix (50/50) and plain water 2 jars scotts 3 n 1, and verm mix (50/50) and oatmeal tea 2 jars scotts 3 n 1, and verm mix (50/50) and superthrive tea
2 jars scotts 3 n 1, and verm mix, and chopped wheat straw (40,20, 40) plain water
strains used are the cambodian, thailand, ecuadorian all from sporeworks.com
ill take pics and document the results. Til next time .. -- Rationally Selfish

Man everyone in the world can get this stuff but me...
You should really use the compost as spawn and use colonized pf cakes to spawn it.
Using the 3 in 1 as a substrate is not how nighttrain achieved his results... He spawned the compost with colonized rye i believe.
I really got to get some of that compost everyone is making me sooooo jealous

I thought they used spawn to speed up the colonization phase. wouldnt the spores still germinate and colonize the bulk subtrate?? is my idea a bad idea??? if so ill change to spawn immediately. thanks. --rationally selfish

ive tried rye, millet, brown rice flour and verm mix.
1st -- rye ... i didnt know what i was doing at the time.. i had no experience and i got most of them to colonize completely.. i lost 5 to contamination out of 15.
2nd -- brown rice..... got the moisture content wrong... bottom half of rice was all wet and stuck together... top half was dry. didnt colonize at all.
3rd -- millet .... couldnt get the moisture content right... turned to nasty porage looking shit. no colonization
4th -- brown rice flour/verm mix (50/50) --- worked beautifully for me still have 4 cakes making shroomies for me now
5th -- my current project soft wheat berries as spawn ... onto beds of scotts 3n1.
Ive pre-cooked the wheat berries and sterilized them ,, and i am very impressed with the turn out.. very few exploded kernals.. water just right,... and no clumps. i say go with the soft wheat berries from whole foods grocery store if u have one near by. --rationally selfish
